Highway Dept to waive tolls during Songkran

BANGKOK, 5 April 2013 (NNT) - The Highway Department is set to waive tolls on major expressways and motorways during the Songkran festival.

The department stated that the toll exemption is aimed at accommodating motorists who wish to visit their hometowns during the festival and at easing congestion in parts of the country.

The department agreed to exempt motorists from tolls for use of Highway No 7 from Bang Na to Chon Buri and Highway No 9 from Bang Phli to Bang Pa-in outer ring road for seven days from 4pm on April 10 to midnight of April 16.

The agency has also prepared measures to boost road safety during the seven dangerous days period which include carrying out repairs on accident-prone spots and installing additional lights and sign posts.

The Highway board forecasted a total revenue loss of about 105 million baht due to the toll exemption.

Excellent and then if they look at the lack of traffic jams as a result, they may get to understand there could be alternatives to tolls if they wish to keep the traffic moving. Then again...

Its better to keep the tolls for those who are willing to pay to move faster. Though there are often traffic jams on tollways too.
