Elephant killed in Phetchaburi
The Nation

PHETCHABURI: -- Another wild elephant has been slaughtered in Phetchaburi's Kaeng Krachan National Park, apparently by poachers after its ivory, National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department deputy chief Theerapat Prayurasiddhi said Tuesday.

Theerapat said that according to Kaeng Krachan National Park chief Chaiwat Limlikhitaksorn's initial report, the headless carcass of a male elephant was found in Ban Pa Teng Forest.

Theerapat said he would inspect the area later Tuesday with a team led by assistant National Police chief Jaramporn Suramanee and a veterinary team.

The carcass would be autopsied in an attempt to find trace evidence that could lead to the arrest of the poachers, Theerapat said.

The carcass was discovered near the site where the carcass of a female elephant was found on March 8. It is suspected that poachers killed it in order to take its baby.

The elephant is the symbol of Thailand , years ago the flag was red with an elephant in the middle. Most Thai people rape their land and kill the wildlife, how can a country do this in this modern age . How can a government still let this happen.

My thoughts exactly. Where is the protection of the animal from the criminals? Leading to WHO are the criminals? The previous slaughter only happened a month ago - why is it so easy to steal the valuables here? Truly a disgrace. ZERO accountability.

Thailand has lots of symbols. Many a western anthropologist (many a Cornell grad) have made a living interpreting these symbols to each other. But most of these symbols are just used by the elite to divert attention away from their rapaciousness. Heck, in Thailand, the elte aren't even Thai, but they have cunningly crafted an narrative that include them into Thai identity. The same thing happens in the US, just different symbols like apple pie, guns, and of course the flag.

simple, have open season on the poachers, maybe when they are getting shot instead of the wildlife they will stop doing it, either that or they will all be killed.thumbsup.gif

There are the (honest) forest rangers out there trying to do their job. Unfortunately (for them) they are out-gunned and out-manned. And more unfortunately ... thay are also getting killed along with the wildlife they are trying to protect. Not everyone is corrupt (and not saying you thought so.)

UPDATE:
ENVIRONMENT

Headless body of elephant found in Kaeng Krachan park

The Nation

PHETCHABURI: -- Another wild elephant has been slaughtered in Phetchaburi's Kaeng Krachan National Park, apparently by poachers after its ivory, deputy chief of the National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department Theerapat Prayurasiddhi said yesterday.

Theerapat said that according to Kaeng Krachan National Park chief Chaiwat Limlikhit-aksorn's initial report, the headless carcass of a male elephant was found in Ban Pa Teng Forest. It looked to have been dead for 15 to 20 days.

Theerapat said he would inspect the area later yesterday with a team led by assistant National Police chief Jaramporn Suramanee and a veterinary team.

They would do an autopsy on the carcass in an attempt to trace evidence that could lead to the arrest of the poachers, he said. The carcass was near the site where the carcass of a female elephant was found on March 8. It is suspected that poachers killed it in order to take its baby.

Theerapat suspected that the poachers who killed the male elephant might be the same group involved in previous elephant kills. He said the elephant slaughter continued despite patrols by forest officials, suggesting that the gang wasn't afraid of the law and might be backed by a big investor.

...or they knew the patrols were pretty much ineffective and easy to avoid.

I am saddened once again to read this new. Laws are meant and will always be broken and unenforced. It's the individual change of heart that will make a difference in this country. Since when is the threat of death ever been a deterrent?
