No, as long as you have a re-entry permit, you can return in time to extend your "retirement visa" for another 12 months during the final 30 days of the current permission to stay. I know many people who are seasonal residents of Chiang Mai and have one-year retirement extensions because it's much less hassle than applying for a new visa every year and/or they want to stay for five or six months each year and don't want to do border runs. Most come in Oct/Nov and leave in April/May.

It's pretty lonely here in Chiang Mai now with so many of my friends gone!
