Cotton Wool Looking Algae In My Ponds?

Featured Replies

i am new to pond keeping and i have some cotton wool looking algae in my ponds

Google leads me to believe its called blanket weed

is there a chemical that i can buy in Thailand to get rid of it?

There's a bacteria you add to the water instead of chemicals. Don't know how to get in the Thailand, but there's plenty online about it.

Use a skimmer and get rid of your string algae. Don't do anything else and the "green" water will eventually disappear

For a scholarly piece on pond algae go here:

thank you for your advise

If it's green fibrous stuff (like fabric) in big clumps, I have it too, and never did before. I think related to the extreme heat.

I've just been manually removing it, but if there is an easy and non-toxic trick I'd like to know. Don't want anything poisonous for fear of harming the frogs and tadpoles etc who breed there.

Well Sheryl I have solved my tadpole problem the non chemical way. The Koi have discovered how good they taste

I don't consider the tadpoles a problem, I like them and am happy my premises are helping maintain the frog population.

(The dog unfortunately does tend to eat the adults, though)

I'm seeing mention online of bacterial formulations for he string algae, anybody know a local brand and where to get it?

The tadpoles like and need the algae to survive, so anything that you would use to kill the algae will starve your little friends

There are a number of concoctions available in Thai aquarium shops, two that I know of are:

thank you so much!

Please post in a week or so, will be interested in what the long term results are

After trying everything, doing nothing , has resulted in the clearest water (in fact, I was kind of bummed out when I saw all the crap on the bottom)
