Quick Question On Children's Ed Visa

Featured Replies

My daughter(8) will be issued an ED visa from the school she will be attending, my husband and I will be coming in on multi-entry B's. Obviously this will mean we have to leave every 3 months to renew. What I need to know is will my daughter be free to travel with us? I have tried finding out from many sources but have drawn a blank so far on the possible travel restrictions of a child's visa. Can anyone help?

Cheers.

All visas allow only limited stay (90 days for non immigrant) so I expect she will obtain a one year extension of stay from immigration for education and require re-entry permits for travel. Schools do not issue visas.

Sorry I didn't mean to say issued by the school, my mistake- what I meant was that they were sorting out the paperwork end of her visa...

So... How does the permit for re- entry work? Sorry for all the questions, but we are very new to this and want to get things right!

You get a re-entry permit from your local immigrtion office. You can either get a single (1,000 baht) or a double (3,800 baht) fill in a form and give a passport size photo.

The re-entry permit is valid for the time your current permission to stay is valid. When you travel out of Thailand you just leave and must make sure that you return before your permission to stay ends. Up on returning you enter the number of your re-entry permit instead of your visa number on your arrival card and yu will be stamped in with your old permission to stay date.

Remember the re-entry permit is only valid for the time of current permitted stay so if she starts with a 90 day visa entry only a single re-entry permit would be required to cover your border trip during that time but when she gets a one year extension of stay from immigration you want want to get a multi re-entry permit at 3,800 baht rather than 1,000 baht single to cover unlimited number of trips during that year.

I am assuming that she will be attending an International School?

My son attends an International School in Bangkok. Last year he was a boarding student, so the school took care of all of the paperwork for his Visa and did the 90-day reporting and if he travelled out of Thailand they took care of getting the re-entry permit as he travelled over the Christmas and Summer breaks.

This past year, as of September, I have moved to Bangkok so now my son lives with me. I have only now (as of last month) gotten a one-year Visa myself for Thailand. Up until now, the school has continued to take care of all of the paperwork and reporting for my son's ED Visa.

As I will have to now do the 90-day report myself and if I leave the country my son will leave as well, I figure that I can take care of my son's at the same time I will do mine. But the school seemed happy to continue taking care of my son's passport/visa/reporting/paperwork.

Hope this helps....
