Human trafficking victims to be allowed to work temporarily in Thailand

BANGKOK, 15 May 2013 (NNT)- Migrant workers, who were once victims of human trafficking, will likely be exempted from paying employment fee to work in Thailand under the new draft law currently being considered.

Labor Minister Padermchai Sasomsap said the law, once approved by the Council of State, will allow illegal aliens, who were human trafficking victims, to work as laborers and housekeepers before they are repatriated.

Upon gaining a temporary employment in the Kingdom, they will also be exempted from the employment fee.

The law will be enforced as soon as the Council of State gives it a nod. Only illegal migrants, proven to have been forced to work against their will, will be entitled to benefit from this law.

Migrant workers are generally required to pay 1,800 for the fee and more for the renewal of their work permits.

So more people can be exploited, paid below the minimum 300 baht per day and then each month the BIB will be in for tea money the same as they do for myanmar & Cambodian workers here both with and without papers.

How do you get from the article above to you conclusion?

A fare enough call , provided these people are treated with respect , not enslaved and abused, just because they are human trafficking victims, make a name for yourself Thailand, one that you, the people of Thailand can be proud of.clap2.gif

If you are so much concerned for the exploitation and the tea money, why don't you do something

constructive instead of posting rubbish like this ? Perhaps you are too old and have plenty of time on your hands.

I see more opportunities for exploitation ahead.

House keepers - meaning underpaid servants. Laborers - meaning slave laborers, plus of course it is only a matter of time before many of them end up as sex workers in Thailand`s bars, escort agencies, brothels and massage parlours.

If many are later faced with being sent back to their own countries with again only the prospects of being dirt poor, then none of them will want to be willingly repatriated and will disappear into the system, because they have nothing the lose.

Giving these people free temporary time to remain in Thailand is unwise.

If they go back home they starve if they stay in Thailand they get a job and earn money and send it back home to feed themselves and family. Why is that unwise?

Many of the so-called victims of human trafficking are willing participants, having full knowledge that they will going to work abroad employed in the sex industries or as prostitutes, believing they are going to earn big amounts of money, for doing very little, in a short period of time.

The problems arise when the job doesn’t work out and can sometimes lead to becoming trapped and involved with unscrupulous criminals and gangs, broken promises and unable to escape their predicaments.

Given the choices, but with fairer working conditions, some will still revert back to working as sex workers. So as for; Why is it unwise to let these people remain in Thailand freely for any amount of time, you can assess the reasons for yourself.

Oh, Bettle you been reading those NGO's again. No one is talking about prostitution. All the hookers are here of their own free will and not trafficked (unless you want to call a bus a trafficker) and are doing just fine. Check out that Thai women's group called Empower I think that's the name it is for the factual story. What this OP is about is fishermen and factory workers and laborers. Hookers stopped being trafficked against their will into Thailand years ago.

I live in Thailand and have for the past 10 years. Very few hookers get trafficked to Thailand. Empower foundation is the current Thai authority on trafficking of women for prostitution. Read it and become informed.

People who were born in Thailand don't get trafficked into Thailand. If you want to read about women who come to Thailand to work as prostitutes try reading , http://www.empowerfoundation.org/sexy_file/Hit%20and%20Run%20%20RATSW%20Eng%20online.pdf

In Thailand the police are part of the problem not part of the solution but if you were born in Thailand you know that already don't you?

What percent of prostitutes are trafficked into Thailand? A 2004 estimate by Dr. Nitet Tinnakul from Chulalongkorn University gives a total of 2.8 million sex workers in Thailand. What percent are trafficked into Thailand from another country against their will?

Empower is just another so-called jobs for the lads charitable organisation.

They have one so-called help out the poor working girls bar business in operation here in Chiang Mai. I will not say too much due to Thailand’s strict defamation laws, but check it out for yourself.

As for your comment: “Very few hookers get trafficked to Thailand” that’s total rubbish. East Europeans, Laos, Cambodians, Burmese, Chinese, Hill Tribe and the list goes on.

My son is a policeman in Chiang Mai and I have lived in Thailand for 30 years. I know the score here.

Best not to walk around with your eyes closed in a make believe world and not to believe everything you read on websites.

Best to understand the meaning of trafficked before you enter your make believe world. What is total rubbish is your spreading a rumor that women get trafficked into Thailand against their will. Do the research. But is this thread about women trafficked into Thailand? Maybe you should read the OP.

I never said, against their will.

But whatever, can`t be bothered to explain.

Human trafficking is defined as using coercion or force to transport an unwilling person into prostitution or other sexual exploitation.

Human trafficking is NOT only about prostitution, but you seem very stuck on this part of it, human trafficking goes far deeper than your prostitution comment.

how about forced labour of men woman and children,

again you are informed

I would ALMOST completely agree with you. Trafficking in Thailand is not about prostitution at all anymore. It is about forced labor of men women and children in many industries as the OP suggests. And the OP does not mention prostitution.
