Thai female researchers secure awards at Korean invention expo

BANGKOK, 16 May 2013 (NNT) – 6 Thai female researchers secured awards from the International Women’s Invention Exposition 2013, with one having received a special award from the Korea Intellectual Property Office.

Dr. Duangphon Amonloetphisan, a researcher from Maejo University in Chiang Mai, showcased a facial mask made from Spirogyra sea weed at the event in South Korea.

According to Dr. Duangphon, Spirogyra is readily found in freshwater bodies in the north and northeast of Thailand, and locals have long been using it for food as it is rich in nutrients. A large number of health foods and cosmetics are being derived from Spirogyra.

Dr. Duangphon told reporters the award-winning, patented gel mask is ready for commercial production. According to her, extracts from Spirogyra has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. When applied to the skin, the gel mask helps provides moisture and relieves wrinkles. Its property of acting against the tyrosinase enzyme, an oxidase, provides a more pronounced counter to freckles and blotches.

Similan- Surin National Parks to be closed until Oct 31

BANGKOK, 15 May 2013 (NNT) – Two of the main tourist destinations off Thailand’s Andaman coast will be closed for more than four months to allow the natural settings to revive themselves during the rainy season.

Deputy Chief of the Similan Islands National Park Surayuth Pa-so said on Wednesday that the National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department has announced a temporary closure of Similan and Surin islands, both in Phang-Nga Province, from May 16 to October 31.

Mr. Surayuth stated that, during the period when tourists are now allowed to enter the islands, the nature will be given a break to revitalize before the new tourist season starts in November.

He said that the break has been decided to be implemented during the rainy season when boat travel may be too perilous.

He added that any tourist boat found violating the ban will be subject to a maximum jail term of one month or a maximum fine of 1,000 baht, or both.

Meanwhile, chief of Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phang-Nga Office Ladawan Chuaychart said that tourists are still able to travel to other islands or choose to stay ashore and enjoy other activities during the rainy season.

Police still working on the hacker case

BANGKOK, 16 May 2013 (NNT) -- Authorities at the Technology Crime Suppression Division (TCSD) say they are working around the clock to find the mastermind behind the attack of the Prime Minister's Office website, with the primary suspect remaining Mr. Narongrit Suksarn.

The TCSD however said it still could not reach the suspect for more investigation, as Mr. Narongrit has fallen ill. Authorities believed the suspected hacker would not try to escape because his illness appeared to be genuine. The TCSD also stated its officials are gathering more evidence on the case and reexamining the website thoroughly for more clues to the attack.

The TCSD claimed that initially it had found the main IP address used in the hacking, but its location is well masked. The TCSD vowed to find the user of the IP address, adding if all evidence points at Mr. Narongrit, the TCSD will conclude the case and summon him to acknowledge the charge.

Nonetheless, the TCSD has targeted 2 more suspects belonging to the Unlimited Hacker Team (UHT), while expressing concerns that the duo were trying to delete their tracks of information online before the officials reach their computer sets for inspection. The TCSD is seeking a warrant to search the suspects’ house expected in the next 2 days.

The UHT reportedly provides education on hacking, which is considered legal currently. However, if students use the knowledge gained from the UHT to commit crime, both the students and educators are subject to punishment by law.
