I was talking with my Aunt the other day and she was telling me about a man she knew who traveled between China and Northern Thailand visiting Taoist hideaways there. Are there Taoist retreats in Thailand and what does anyone know about them?

I know there is one in Buriram. I took these shots while I was there on New Years day, of this year. As you can see, they had a very large community fair fund raiser going on on that day. Many of the people there had travelled from affiliate temples [or so I was told]. It was a very charming experience. And a nice community of people, too. The name escapes me now, but I do have some of their brochures laying about [somewheres... ]

Taoism is an ancient belief in the way. That is what Tao means "the way". There is no belief in a God but there is the heavens. One might call it nature based, but that would only be apart of it. There is a natural order to things and finding the way is finding the path of balance, which is the key to understanding all things. It's more complex but to keep it easy that's it in a nut shell.

Apparently they have an annual vegetarian festival in Phuket. I found a pretty informative link about it here: http://www.paradisturen.com/phuket_fes.htm

I was just visiting Ranong and a local Sino-Thai guide I used there mentioned they too celebrated the same festival in Ranong. Ranong has a very large ethnic Chinese community that goes back quite far in time. So I would imagine you could find a Taoist temple or two there as well. I know I saw many Chinese temples over the course of the five days I was in town.

This is very well put TBB. I checked with my friend in Samui, he agrees with the above posts, there are very few Taoists in Thailand (relatively speaking).

To add to the above. Taoists hold the view that all things should be in balance, 'Yin & Yang' is a classic Tao philosophy. My friend also maintains that there are more similarities with Buddhism than differences, so although Taoist he 'borrows' from Buddhism without contradiction (his words). He seems very happy.
