Names (And Addy's) Of Camera Vendors At Pantip Plaza (?)

Featured Replies

Currently not in Thailand but am trying to find out prices especially of the following cameras:

The new Canon EOS 100D, body only (no kit lens)

The new Canon EOS 700D, body only

(might also be interested in 650D or 600D if they are substantially less)

I forgot the names of the main popular vendors, especially the ones on say 3rd floor or so (or is it 2nd?). The only one I remember way up top is Digital Time if I am correct but I know there's more.

I remember the name and address of one of the biggest computer sellers J.I.B. (www. jib.co.th) but I don't need that right now (strangely, their site is down but I used it many times in the past).

Any help on names of shops, addresses, and/or prices? Thanks.

I did a fair bit of shopping around for Canon gear in Bangkok, and by far the best shop I found is FotoFile located in MBK.

They have a small shop on the first floor, and a larger one on the third (I think).

Excellent guarantee and service, and very very competitive on pricing, but you can only negotiate with the main manager guy, he runs a pretty tight ship and is very successful, so softly softly don't treat him as if he's sidewalk scammer.

My wife yesterday picked up a leaflet from 'Big Camera' the prices shown on the leaflet as follows:

EOS650D with 18 to 55 mm 27900 baht

EOS600D with 18 to 55 mm 23900 baht

no body only listed and no 100D or 700D shown

Sorry they only show prices with lenses but that's all I got on the leaflet, maybe they have body only prices on their website that you can use as guideline.

Yep, great place, highly recommended to me by a pro, since also confirmed by many shutterbugs.

I had a problem with my camera after it was out of warrantee and they took care of it and gave it a good cleaning/service, wouldn't take my money because I'd bought it there.

Thanks so far for the above information. Yes I recall the MBK fotofile but have never been a customer there, good to hear they have a good rep.

@Rimmer, I've always considered BigCamera to be one of the pricier places around BKK. On the up side, they are located in practically every hypermarket around town so if you ever did buy from them at least you'd feel a lot safer. Seems like polite servce as well. Thanks for the price quote though.

Thanks for the link. So, according to the link one vendor, fotofile in MBK is selling at 20,900 or I figure to be about $705 (no?).

Would still like to get some of the other names at Pantip, I think was called AV Center perhaps?

Fotofile have nothing special and is just the biggest owner of many shops.

After checking all I got a lot better prices at smaller shops, Fotofile does not care small orders and never discount, so I would never buy there.

Since I am staying in Thailand and value service attitude over saving a few baht, I'll stick with FF myself. They definitely discounted for me when I asked nicely, in my case maybe because I was working for a well-known international school?

In general I've found choosing the absolutely lowest-priced vendor to be inviting problems, not worth it if the difference is only a few percent.

No idea about large bulk orders, thought we were just talking about normal retail here.

You didn't say where you are now, but I've found prices outside Thailand to be much cheaper. You might want to check that out. Some of the best prices I've ever found have been here:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

And they'll ship internationally.

Thanks for that link. Looks like the above seller is almost at the exact same prices as listed on Amazon, for both cameras. Couldn't find a direct quote on shipping though.

Palman, I basically know what you mean. When we do our shopping for gear, especially when it's on several occasions, we tend to get a "feel" and develop a hunch about different vendors, experiences, and where we would go for different things. One vendor is great for accessories but is quite lacking for main equipment, and so on.

Craig, I'm in Vietnam. Am likely heading to BKK sometime later this summer.

I personally don't like doing much shopping if any at all in VN. Agree, disagree? I find most of the vendors a very blatant "money-first" approach. Also, the selection is quite lacking here and as far as any bigger sellers it is quite limited in comparison.

The biggest places seem to be in the downtown area of Ngyuen Hue street, inside the Xa Tax Center, and near side streets. If anyone in TL has good recs for better places in VN let me know, but I usually prefer to steer clear of big shopping in VN.

Regarding the sellers in Pantip, I found an old receipt sales slip, and one shop I've been to for several things is indeed called "AV Center" as said above. On a google images search, I found a few pics -- oddly, they've since changed their name simply to "Camera Shop", which I suppose doesn't seem highly trustworthy:

In this one it's called Camera & Lens.

I don't know how old those pictures are, but I've been in there to buy things 3 times.

Anyhow if anyone has website urls, or else stops in there sometime in the near future, please post prices.

Anyway to resize the first pic down to say 800px?

if you have any friends coming from america or passing through korea or japan or sng or hk or anywhere probably you will get a much much better deal. it is one of those items that can be fit into a suitcase rather easily, an easy way to save some money.

this is an item you dont want to buy in thailand.

who knows if it is real.

how many times it has been dropped?

every single box of every electronic product in thailand has been opened already for some reason. so different than the rest of the world. <deleted>?

Personally I prefer Fortune Town as they have a cluster of photo shops on the second floor near the entrance I use from the MRT, not so popular with the tourists so a bit better price I find (and no DVD touts).

All the major photo shops are there so easy to compare pricing.

I purchased a Canon 1100D which was on special and came with the lense. Certainly a better deal than Big Camera and I got a good deal on a second battery, bigger SD card, lense filter, etc.

This is the chain where I purchased from, and has price lists: digital2home dot com

Ok, digital2home and digilifethailand, those are two good websites to look at. Thanks for those.

Farang000999, I know what you mean. I bought one Fujifilm point and shoot camera in one of the Pantip sellers, they pretty much guaranteed me it was completely brand new,

something about "never touched" or words like that. Got back to the room and found a bunch of in store test photos on the internal memory of the camera with several different

customers' faces as well.
