From what i have seen before there seems to few advantages apart from 12 month extension of stay (based upon marrage to a thai national) instead of an Ed visa.

With regards work you still have to find a company that will get you a work permit. And it being Thailand you can't do jobs thai people are able to do!

I am looking to obtain a marriage visa.

Would it give me any benefits!

This depends on what visa you are already on.

Would I be able to work?

No. You need a work permit to work.

Could I get a credit card?

Not unless you have a work permit and can prove that you make 50,000 baht a month or have at least 50,000 in a Thai bank account.

A non-O visa or extension based on marriage would not allow you to work in itself, but it does allow you to get a work permit.

However, a work permit is only issued for an in the WP specified job, for the specified employer at the specified location. In other words, you first find a job and than try to get a work permit for it.

I sometimes read posts on here and think that some people think if they get married then they can live here and work here without the normal rules, but it is not that simple.

Unfortunately, Thailand does not have the same immigration rules for spouses as many other countries do. A spouse must meet nearly all the same criteria as other Non-O visa holders in order to support their family in Thailand.
