Wp Does It Matter?

Featured Replies

Okay, I know that for any work, paid or not, a WP is needed. However does anyone personally know of anyone who was arrested for not having one, and if so what were the consequnces?

Arrests are made, sometimes they raid a work place such as a language school. I guess you didn't follow the news about Phuket, where it is now a hot issue with arrests made and shops checked as local complain about unfair competition.

The system is set-up to pay a fine and leave the country. But jail time is possible.

Yes I have seen (about 5 years ago) the Immigration police come into an office taking pictures and checking documents (WP etc) for those that didn't have the correct WP's or any WP's they where loaded in the paddy wagon and taken away. One guy was a friend and his stated work address was not this address so they threatned him with a 50K fine, after some time they let him go - the others I am not sure about.

A few years ago an expat colleague's wife, here legally as his dependant, was helping out a couple of days a week at a local charity. There was dispute in her office and one of the local employees was fired. The next day, the immigration police turned up checking work permits, she didn't have one. She copped a heavy fine and was ultimately deported, taking the whole family with her.

It doesn't seem worth the risk.

Funny enough, they've never had any issues coming back into the country on holidays.

Do you know why ?

Volunteering is classified as working and needs a WP. If you don't have a WP, they first choice you have is to pay a fine and leave the country.

If she would have gone to court, she probably would just have received a lesser fine, but a criminal record as result of her conviction. On the other hand, a judge can give a jail sentence too. (But for volunteeering I strongly suspect a fine only, a suspended jaitime at the most).

I know someone that was fined and deported and the company that she worked for was fined 50,000 baht.

As said, it depends on the type of work, boiler shop types are regularly raided and the folks fined and deported.

An immigration squad, black uniforms and all, swarmed and hermetically sealed my office a couple of weeks ago. They left no question in my mind as to what would have happened if all the farang's documents were not in order.

As far as working at home "under the radar" you make yourself extremely vulnerable to being ratted out by an unhappy neighbor, date or anyone else whose toes you might ever have stepped on. Immigration don't usually go door-to-door, but they will respond to complaints.

A recent raid in Bang Na with Filis, Dutch and Brits landed them a two year sentence in BKK...suppose deportation on release...this of course was fraud as well as no WP

A few years ago an office in Surawong Road was raided after a complaint from one of its customers, all the westerners working there were deported and the business closed down!
