(BNO NEWS) -- The sixth installment of the "Fast & Furious" film franchise grossed an estimated $120 million during the three-day Memorial Day weekend in the United States, and more than $256 million worldwide, according to figures from box office trackers."Fast & Furious 6" arrived in theaters across the United States on Friday and immediately shot to the number one position, making it the biggest opening film in the history of Universal Pictures with an estimated $120 million between Friday and Monday, according to Hollywood.com.But it is not the biggest film opening of the year as Disney's "Iron Man 3" grossed an estimated $175.3 million earlier this month. Worldwide, the action-packed movie grossed an estimated $275 million between Friday and Sunday, according to consumer viewership information provider Rentrak.Across the United States, movies grossed more than $316 million overall, marking the first time that a Memorial Day weekend garnered more than $300 million. Leading behind "Fast & Furious 6" was "The Hangover Part III" with $51.2 million, "Star Trek: Into Darkness" with $47 million, and "Epic" with $42.6 million."A perfect storm of hits led to this incredible weekend with going out to the movies proving itself to be the first choice for outside of the home entertainment," said Paul Dergarabedian of Hollywood.com.
