Don't do it, dude!

Why???????

Don't do it, dude!

Why???????

Because your decision to start a business is based on distorted emotional reasons ( I like thai people very much because they are friendly (sic)) based on what sounds like three short trips rather than any sound business reason; you obviously haven't done any due diligence of your own or else you wouldn't be asking the question you did here.

Have you spoken to any other restaurant owner? Do you know about key money and tea money?

Are you aware of how hard it is to find staff? (Unemployment is officially (0.62%)

Do you know how many other restaurants are in Pattaya?

All you've asked about here is the WP and visa. How about the licensing process, business registration, health department inspections, liquor licence, etc?

The best way to make a small fortune in Thailand is to come with a large one... or agree to the "business proposal" of one of the friendly Thai people - or even worse many times, a friendly foreigner - you met on one of your brief visits.

Settle down, take a valium, and spend a few weeks researching it from your home location and then a month on the ground asking lots of questions before evening thinking about how much money you are prepared to lose.

There are restrictions in Thailand on what business you can run as a foreigner.

Opening a restaurant and also a retail store business may not be possible unless you are a Thai citizen or have the Baht capital required to invest.

Even then you may only be able to own 49% of the business as a foreigner.

In other words, before you jump in, do your research on the subject.

It has requirements you must meet first.

You just can't come to Thailand as a foreigner and immediately start a business of your own without Thai partners.

P.S. I'm NOT saying it is impossible, I'm just saying you must do a lot or research on the subject first.

You will also need the money to invest up front and Thai partners who will own the majority share of most businesses (partners will control 51%, you will control 49% maximum).

There are not really restrictions per se on what businesses you can own in Thailand, but the 49% limit on foreign ownership is the norm so you do require Thai Shareholders.

However there are restrictions on what work you can do as a foreigner, plus you require a correct and valid Work Permit for the specific job you do, to get a work permit you do require Thai employees.

Correct, Registered Capital is required to start a Thai business, but it is just that, it is not actual cash; you simply pay a fee per million Baht that you register when a business is formed then show the capital as a liability in the form of a loan to the owners and consequently account for the growth of capital assests/reduction of loan liability over the years.

You will certainly need a fair sum of cash plus additional cashflow to start and run a business here as anywhere; but there are many many pitfalls - most who come here and start businesses will fail quite quickly.

To start a business anywhere you need to understand and know the market/field and that takes time to accrue, don't be in a rush - it won't work.
