' Square-faced Man' A New Hit Song

a tool for agitation.

It isn't played publicly to taunt pro-Thaksin supporters and it doesn't call for violence. You have no reasons to suspect it's written in order to agitate anyone.

Are you trying to tell me that playing the song loudly during the rallies, making it available on the internet and distribung CDs is not fullfilling the term "publically"?

And no only direct calls for violence fall under the definition of "agitation".

It's not played publicly to taunt pro-Thaksin's supporters at THEIR rallies, and at PAD rallies people don't rush to attack anything.

What's the problem with putting the song on the Internet - don't like it don't download, no one is forcing people to listen to it.

The "motorcycle" accident and Manager's office is a curious one, though. I want to see more details. Now it looks like a pissup match over the fence.

I think you are in conflict with what you consider as "what's the problem" and what the law considers as "public".

ColPyat, you are to be commended for your persistence and stance. I may not agree with what you say but then that's what this board is all about - discussion and friendly disagreement.

Since I seem to be on the 'opposite' side of the fence to you regarding the plight of the 'Caretaker' I would like to offer this morsel

"During these years, his regime was marred by widespread corruption and political mismanagement by his cronies, which culminated with the assassination of (--------------) he can be considered the quintessential kleptocrat, having supposedly looted billions of ???????? from the (----------) treasury. Much of the lost sum has yet to be accounted for, but ??????? million has been recovered and returned to the government. He was also a notorious nepotist, appointing family members and close friends to high positions in his government. This practice led to unchecked, widespread political mismanagement especially during the ??????? "

Sound familiar? No it's not the 'Caretaker" P.M.but the late Ferdy Marcos. The big difference here is that the current 'Caretaker' was democratically elected by a majority of Thai people. Monday April 3rd should tell us whether the same thing has happened.

As for the 'nar liam' video/karaoke, he should be thankful the boys at the British Spitting Image studios did not get hold of his antics and make a short film. Most British PM's and sadly The English Royal family have also had the urine extracted from them. I doubt anybody was sued. Once agaiin I stand to be corrected. :o

Colpyat, I don't understand you - the song doesn't agitate anyone when it's on the Internet, or when it's sold on CDs, or when it's played at PAD rallies.

It's also not illegal.

As for Manager incindent - so far it appears that the song and the neighbours joining in actually forced motorcyclists to abandon their rally which included throwing things in the compound and climbing over the fences.

They must have thought they looked pretty stupid rallying on behalf of Thaksin while everyone else had a laugh at them.

Good song - it actually prevents violence and brings peole into their senses.

Let's wait for more details tomorrow.

As for musical value - it's nothing, and it's too long, and difficult to remember.

A rough translation of square-head man.

Our square shaped friend is a thick-skinned man,

A Singapore lackey, he's hellbound, so brazen,

His staff, how they lick and fawn,

A mixed breed man, mixing Thai and English- cheap show-off.

The Opposition boycott, public start to stir, but he's unfazed,

Our insensitive dude is no real man, afraid of exposure, he dissolves Parliament,

Square-face head, handing crisp new banknotes to those going to ballot booths,

Some fake ballot papers too, to get 19 million votes,

Under pressure to resign -in the next life he says,

Sold Shin, sold the country, devoured it for his Chinese clan.

Power, he bought with currency,

Conspiring in the baht's flotation, he damaged the economy with his dollar hoarding,

If the law has a loophole, he emerges with a business,

When it's exposed, hiring a lawyer, he forgets to mention ethics.

Buying land for speculation, insider information told him about the sky train,

Vested interest policy, all the family rich, even the maids and gardeners!

Foreign products promoted in Thailand, it's free trade exchanged for IPstar,

Acting as mafia, extorting, fraud, even kidnap and killing.

Always devious, looking for underhand moves,

When hungry he consumes all the airwaves, Post Office, Egat,

For snacks he eats longan, for appetizers TPI and also rubber seedlings,

For take- away it's PTT with the shares given to Oak( his son) and Or( his wife),

At his home ,'The moonlit dogs'.

Thinking deviously, he can't get enough sleep,

Concealing the CTX scandal, sex is forgotten, an activity he loves,

Worried about Ample Rich, he forgets to zip his trousers after a leak( meaning can't control all his staff),

Concerned his fate is declining, his assets may be seized, he's afraid of higher powers.

The populist policies of square-head, what a boon!

Village funds debts for the grass-roots,

Debts postponed, money left over for mobile phones for all,

The 'caring' housing programme, shoddy, sloppy quality, cheaper to build your own,

'Silence killings' in the drug trade because the big fish fear exposure.

Legalised underground lottery, 75 percent for fraud, 25 percent for education,

30 baht scheme, every disease, diabetes, bird flu but just paracetomal,

When the square face man's popularity wanes, like a loose woman he hugs,

All those he sees, weeping crocodile tears.

Endless cheating,

He pays the Constitutional Court to not pass a verdict regarding asset concealment,

He finds and buys eunuchs for the independent organisations,

Corrupts the Civil Service, his minions promoted,

The tyrant square face, so conceited,

Wants to be a statesman, the short tail dog with a rotten face,( ie wants to look good but isn't),

Not knowing high from low,( respect for those senior), he insults Royalty,

Boasting he appoints The Supreme Patriach, the devil himself.

Square- head man, a Nazi who only lies,

Says he can catch the southern terrorists, but innocents are framed or die,

Claims he's a good person, but cheating on tax he sends his son to face the rap,

Claims to follow the system, but when disadvantaged he changes the rules.

He'll buy Liverpool, Fulham, fabricating news to hide his sins,

Asked to sign an agreement, he produces another one he's prepared,

Claims to suppress corruption, his dirty mouth should be suppressed,

Talks of Buddhist teachings, but when asked he just says 'so be it'.

Square-face geometrically sound,

His younger relative fatter, smaller brain, faked diploma to get a degree,

His daughter not bright, even after cheating GPA only over 2,

His son a low IQ, wearing shades to hide his drug addiction.

His wife unashamedly corrupt, strolling in the Emporiom is criticised,

So many more cases, from the monkhood to mega projects,

suffering from insomnia, he must have injections,

Soon he'll be neurotic, maybe strip off, hollering at an advertising sign.

In the future Thailand, maybe a secret prison with bases for the USA,

Singaporeans can come and go,well connected, no need for visas,

Khmer witchdoctors will be wealthy from casting spells to send square-head to Parliament,

Embezzling Thailand's money, he'll use to support Burma's economy.

Thailand will sell its shares , one baht as per par,

The national anthem will be changed, copyright monopolised this life and next,

Hitler will be reborn, his last son called' gold plated collection'.

There then follows a long list of Thaksin's colleagues.

I apologise for not being able to get the rhymes or rhythms of the original- it's so long! There's many puns and references to scandals in this song , ie the longan scandal involving Thaksin's close relatives, the unprecedented opening of the entrance exam papers for university last year by a man recently promoted by Thaksin, etc.

Is that the real translation for: "look sao man ngoo chiphai"?

I don't think so.

This is a very cleaned up version.

Translation of "look sao man ngoo chiphai" = The daughter is bloody stupid.

Well, thanks. :D

I don't think though that we are on "the opposite side of the fence", as i am everything else than a Thaksin supporter. But i can't support the PAD either.

I wish though the Brits would have been given the job of making a parody on Thaksin - it would have been a lot funnier (sorry, i'm a sucker for british comedies).

I can't say much about Marcos, during most of his antics i was still in school.

I can only say what a very high ranked Philippino communist told me last year during my only visit to the Philippines. He said that all his expectations of 'people power' were shattered as, his words: "nothing has changed, and the poor are still poor".

Translation of "look sao man ngoo chiphai" = The daughter is bloody stupid.

Which in Thai is a bit stronger than in English, especially as the form of adress "man" was used, that is generally reserved for animals, and when used with people, is extremely insulting. Same as the form of adress "ai" which is used througout the song, another extremely impolite form of adress that gets lost in tanslation as English and most other western languages do not have such a wide range of hirarchal forms of adress.

Yesterday my wife heard the song for the first time. She is from the North but defiantly anti-Thaksin.

She laughed at the song but when it was finished her comment was, "That's not good". She was commenting on the derogatory comments in the song about Thaksins family. The north has very deep cultural family values and you just don't say things like that in public about anyone's family there. If you did it would probably end in a punch-up. Seems, insulting Thaksin was fair game but making derogatory comments about and insulting his family was way over the line in her opinion. She has defiantly softened her view about the protests because of this. I was not expecting her reaction as I was sure I would get a new round of "Thaksin Awk Pai" for a few days, but nothing.

Sorry, but if you can't understand the Thai version, you will not catch the full meaning of this song. You only got a very watered down translation without the juicy parts, without any of the extremely drogatory forms of adress and epressions. With this translation it is impossible to understand why this song is infuriating Thaksin supporters.

hmmm I thought Ai for men and Ee for women was a common form of address in Isaan ..... not rude at all in context of support from Isaan

Yes ... speaking that way in BKK to a BKKian might be implying someone is from Isaan/Laos ... and some people would take offense to that ... but playing to the dichotomy of Thaksin relying MOSTLY on support from Isaan makes sense to use appropriate language from that region

And is the song supposed to be offensive? Of course!

Then again ... are the scandals mentioned real? Of Course!

No one forced Thaksin into using his family to avoid the laws involving control and investment in Business .... that was his choice.

I am not that familiar with the Isaarn dialects.

In my wife's local northern dialect "Ai" and "Ee" are part of the rougher colloquial lingo in adressing friends and relatives, not though used in formal settings or in adressing strangers. "Man" is used in the same way, but not ever for respected people of high social rank.

Anyhow, this song is sung in central Thai, and not in Lao, or Northern Thai, and in central Thai "Ai" and "Ee" are extremely insulting forms of adress by any means.

You mentioned once that you can not only speak, but also read and write Thai, so please, you only insult my intelligence if you persist in your position that this song is not using gutter Thai and meant to hurt.

Would you use some of those expressions and forms of adress outside your circle of closest friends? I doubt that very much. If you, as a stranger, would walk into a village and use that language you would play with your life, and i think you know that very well. So, please... :o

Sorry Brit ... a scandal by definition doesn't have to be proven .... it can all be inference ... a criminal vioation of the law is different.

If you believe that the usage of impolite Thai language in the wrong social setting here cannot endanger your life, than you must life a very sheltered life here. But please don't extrapolate from that position on something you apearantly have very limited personal experience with.

And no, i am not offended by the song, and most of the facts pointed out by the song are most definately true. I have mentioned that before, it must have slipped your mind, i am not a Thaksin supporter, have never been, never will be.

I only pointed out that the use of that sort of language is not to educate those village folks. You may have gotten the impression during your field trip to Isaarn with your Chula educated friends that this might be the right language to employ when speaking with those villagers, but i can assure you - this sort of language will not make you friends there.

And regarding the use of "Ai" and "Ee", what do you try to tell me, that these forms of adress are proper forms of adress in polite conversation? LOL!

Not unexpected really as history tells us poverty can take generations to overcome, so 20 years on from Marcos and it's still there is rather expected.

That's the reality anywhere, unlike Thaksin's Golden-Tongued Promises to completely eradicate poverty here in 3 years.

Significant change for serious problems aren't cured overnight.

Ask your associate next time how many people were butchered under Marcos' long years of tyranny or if he ever had the joy of voting or read a free press or speak freely or a host of any of other significant changes that have occured since the SOB's demise.
