Been there 3 years ago...never coming back! Mafia everywhere

I lived in Phuket for 8 years, who is the mafia? I guess you mean influential families? Don't they have those in every country? I really never have any problems here, although I don't live in Patong... And then again, I'm not a tourist...

I wondered what the police escort with 7 coaches coming from The Hilton Arcadia was all about this morning. Another high price jolly for the government folks.

Clearly you do not understand Thainess. If a farang could do something with one or two people, any thing (take out the garbage, decide how to cut their hair, etc.) it takes about 10 Thai's standing around talking at each other for hours to do the same thing. So imagine something important like clean up Phuket, that would require 100 or more Thai's conferring for hours.

Been there 20 years ago and it was dirty then, can't imagine it has improved any.

Where are you now that is so much cleaner? Twenty years ago there wasn't much here was there? Dirt roads are dirty!

Dirty as in garbage pollution, not as in dirt. I would be quite happy with dirt.

This part is extremely amusing: "Asked about the problem of jet ski and rental vehicle scams, Sen Thanyarat said, “We have good people in these businesses. But while 10 are good, one may be bad, which ruins everyone’s reputation." This person is either a bald face liar, or completely out of touch with the situation. If anything, it's exactly the reverse, one in ten might be a decent person. Actually, I pity any honest jet ski operators, because their scumbag colleagues have given a bad reputation to everybody.

Surely an honest jetski operator would be quickly forced out of business by his "colleagues"
