Qatar lifts ban on Thai poultry

BANGKOK, 14 June 2013 (NNT) - According to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Qatar has lifted an import ban on Thai poultry products, effective since June 10.

During her official visit to the gulf state last month, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra reached the agreement with her Qatari counterpart.

Qatar imposed a ban on imports of Thai chicken meat in 2003 after the outbreak of the Avian Influenza in Thailand. The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has confirmed that no avian flu virus was found in Thailand for more than a year.

Chickens are generally prepared through strict halal procedures in order to meet the Middle Eastern country’s import standards.

JICA donates 515 million baht to prevent flood in Ayutthaya

BANGKOK, 14 June 2013 (NNT) - The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has donated 515 million baht to develop a flood prevention system for industrial estates in the western part of Ayutthaya province.

Ayutthaya’s Royal Irrigation Office director, Maitree Pitinanont, said the construction of flood gates at Kamang Canal and Hantra Canal will begin in July and is expected to be completed in November 2014.

He elaborated that recent heavy downpours raised fears of another flood crisis among local residents. The Meteorological Department reported earlier that a strong southwestern monsoon would continue to prevail over Thailand until next week, bringing torrential rains to many parts of the country.

The gates are set to protect the province’s industrial estates mainly Japanese factories that were closed by the 2011 floods. During the flood disaster in late 2011, Ayutthaya province was badly hit with 157 historic monuments damaged and hundreds of factories closed.
