BTW, those who live full time in Thailand, do you or partner know the number for the Ambulance?

Posted

Yes I do know what to do.

My mum once saved a baby at hever castle cafe when the parents gave the 10month old a bag of iced gems to eat. immidiately, the kid swallowed an ice gem whole, started choking & the parents were screaming & crying, mum walked up calm as anything, laid baby face down on her fore arm & slapped it's back till the gem fell out.

Once everyone had calmed down she then slated the parents for feeding a baby ice gems & for not taking a first aid course when they were pregnant. She has an even shorter tolerence for stupid than I do.

someone asked aobut their partners?

about half a year ago, i started to choke on a piece of my husband's wonderful dried issaan beef jerky... my chewing wasnt wonderful due to teeth problems, so i ended up choking... i started seeing red, my silly 17 yr old (who had done more then one course of first aid for children as she, like all kibbutz girls, worked with the babies/children during the summer) got in to a panic... she couldnt remember the emergency cell phone number so she dialled my best friend and neighbhor.daughter was also was so panicked , and so used to ME knowing what to do, that she gave ME ! the phone to speak to my friend. of course, i was choking and couldnt speak, let alone breathe. hubby, also in a panic, rammed his entire hand down my throat trying to grab the piece of meat. in the end, i heimleiched myself, and for days after had a sore throat from hubby. and for aobut half a year, i had (most likely psychological) problems swallowing large pieces of anything, or anything 'rough', i would have involuntary spasms in my esophagus. i had to bio feedback myself out of the problem. (its fixed now so it wanst organic but in my brain)....

hubby couldnt call for help as he speaks little or no hebrew or english. if i ever suffer a heart attack or a TIA , im dead.

i also saved a young infant in our amusement park many years ago: a young ethiopian woman's baby choked. since most of these women came over from rural areas , they also do not know anything about cpr... i grabbed the infant, put him over my arm, a slight cupped hand on his back, and out came whatever it was that had blocked his airway.

i have to admit, ive also given mouth to mouth to an alpaca getting anesthesia in the field, and to a dog on the operating table until we could intubate, and to a baby goat or three after birth (born not breathing)...

At what age do you stop doing the back thump/chest press and start doing the Heimlich manoeuvre ?

At about 1 year old you start doing the Heimlich. But don't use too much force on a small child! You don't want to cause damage, so built the strenght you apply up carefully if needed.

You could always lay the child over your knees until they got to big. First Aid is part improvising. Use whatever you feel at the time. If the back thump doesnt work, move to the next. Heck, even pick the child up by their feet and smack their back. Anythings better than thinking Im not sure if I should do that because the video didnt show me. Like CPR, if you cant remember the breaths to compression ratio, doesnt matter, just blow in the mouth. Something, anythings better than doing nothing.smile.png

Now, how do I get a 6 month old to sleep easily?....rolleyes.gif

I don't think you are supposed to hang them by their feet??

Get a six month old to sleep? When, middle of the night..feed them. Daytime they fall asleep on their own. Normal bedtime...feed them. If they have colic, good luck.

If need be, and nothing's working, I'd hold them upside down and smack their back. Like I said, first aid is anything that may work to save a life. I remember learning tracheotimy at first aid courses. These days it's not taught because the patient can press charges but I'd use it if need be. Beats choking to death.

I am pretty sure hanging them upside down has no benefit whatsoever.
