Opticians

Pattaya seems to be full of optician shops, but the opticians themselves all seem to be about 12 years old and of dubious qualification.

As the owner of "difficult" eyes which require some creative prescribing, can anyone suggest an experienced optician in the area?

Thanks

I also have that problem, and I also have gaucoma. In Bangkok I went to Samitiwet and was examined and prescribed by a consultant opthalmologist. he was very good and the charges were very reasonable. I got a prescrition which I could take anywhere.

Now, apparently there is a good opthalmic section at Bangkok Pattaya. I am planning to do the same here, but will check in advance what they charge, as you do get conflicting advice about this hospital.

I agree about these kids at the opticvians. I'm sure they've just been on a two day training course.

i second mr doom,

for simple optician work, i've used top charoen in many locations.

they even caught an error in a script from my US optometrist.

the lenses are not ground on site, get your M.D. work done at one of the hospitals, glasses at the shop in town.

if you have doubts, a quick consult with GP Dr oliver, pattaya tai, can point you in the right direction.

Yep I've had really good service at Top Chaoen they have made several sets of 'graded' specs for me which work very well indeed. I use the one in Mikes Shopping Mall at the beach end, The girls in there seem to be properly qualified.

As a postscript I went into their branch in Jomtien for 2 sets of new nose pieces for 3 year old specs, the staff identified the glassess were from their shop in town and did not charge for the replacement parts. I also got a free sit down and and a cup of tea whilst they fitted them for me :o

I had similar problems as I have astigmatism in my left eye, which requires a very thin but specialised prism in my left lens. All of these so-called "opticians" with very young and nubile girls, with mini-skirted white suits (yes, my eyes, and other parts of my anatomy, are more than good enough to notice them) are very tempting but they are useless.

Eventually, I found "EuroOptic", opposite the Royal Garden Plaza/Marriott Hotel. This business belongs to a Philippino doctor (Dr. Maria) and you won't find anyone or anywhere more professional or capable.

Thanks for all the feedback, sounds like Dr Maria is worth a visit.

Check her opening times first. They are posted on the door of the shop and evening hours seem to be when she's present. BTW...she's quite nice too!!

Sounds perferct. :o

Dr Maria for the prescription.

Then over the road to the very young and nubile girls, with mini-skirted white suits to fit the frames. They can't screw the frames up too much can they? anyway, WHO CARES? :D

I have bad astigmatism in my left eye too.

I recently got a pair made in Big C Centre that I can see a computer screen fine with but anythoing else I can not - its impossible to wear them so its 5000THB down the swanny.

Top Charoen made a good pair that i got in Samui but i will try your place in two weeks.

My glasses weren't cheap. The frames are Rodenstock (Germany), acrylic progressive lenses with a thin prism in the left lens, anti-scratch, anti-glare and multi-coated (but NOT tinted). Cost me 15,000 baht total...probably because of the frames. :o

Based on the recommendations here I recently visited Euro optics.

This is without a doubt the most professional opticians I have dealt with. Not looking for a quick sale for sure -

She started the initial examination and stated she did not want to proceed as my eyes were too "tired" and examining them now would most likely result in incorrect lens being prescribed.

The truth was I had little sleep and far too much to drink the day before, but there was no pushing me into buying anything, I will go back! :o

I also recommend EuroOptic. When you 'go back' remember that they close for lunch 12.30-1.30 even though opening hours are 10am-9.00 pm
