webfact
Students Severely Injured By 'Electric Shock' At Science MuseumEntrance to Wakor Science Park (file photo)KHOAOSOD EnglishPRACHUAB KHIRI KHAN: -- Ill-maintained electric circuit is thought to be responsible for the accident in which 3 elementary school students were seriously injured after they touched a metal bar at a major science museum in Prachuab Kiri Khan province.Police say the incident happened when a group of students from a Catholic school in Prachuab Kiri Khan province was visiting Wakor Science Park, which is located in the same province.3 students, aged 8, 12, and 12, reportedly touched a metal railing in the museum′s astronomy section, which was filled with leaked electricity from the building′s circuit. The 3 fainted immediately from the shock. The students were sent to the provincial hospital and their conditions were initially described as seriously injured. However, their conditions are said to have improved, but doctors said the patients will have to undergo brain checkup.Police officers from Klong Warn police station said the technicians at the museum told them that the establishment had been poorly maintained, especially its electric circuit, which led to the accident.Mr. Prakit Chansri, director of Wakor Science Park, said he had closed off the museum temporarily in order to investigate the cause of the electric shock closely. He told our correspondent that the investigation will be concluded within 7 days, and the museum will pay all medical bills and any other compensation for the injured students. He said the matter will be taken seriously as the museum is routinely visited by tourists and students from many schools in the country.Full story: http://www.khaosod.co.th/en/view_newsonline.php?newsid=TVRNM01qQTBNVEExTVE9PQ== -- KHAOSOD English 2013-06-

varun
Ironic that it happened at a Science Museum. Somchai the electrician was definitely sleeping during Electric Engineering 101.

Payboy
doctors said the patients will have to undergo brain checkup I strongly suspect they may not find any traces of science knowledge.
Popular Post jaltsc
When given a quiz after the visit to the science museum and asked if electricity can be dangerous, none of the students were able to answer the question due to the fact that one of the injured students was the one from whom the rest of the class copied

Suffinator
Next story... move on... happens every day in Thailand and will continue to do so until they implement safety standards. Many tourists have been killed by electrocution in Thailand due to piss poor electrical work but nothing has ever been improved.
cup-O-coffee
And it has been proven yet again that in Thailand "there is no emergency or crisis until it happens". You can't write this stuff.
johnlandy
Can't say I'm shocked by this story. Nor surprised given the standard of electrical installations in this country. What is equally shocking (no pun intended) is the equally shocking standard of journalism in the report i.e. which was 'filled' with leaked electricity from the building′s circuit. Perhaps they might master the 'kings English' before the end of the millennia. But I will not be holding my breath. Many tourists have been killed by electrocution in Thailand due to piss poor electrical work but nothing has ever been improved. A country which carries out thousands of unregulated work practices on such a wide scale in gay abandon and absolutely no surprise to see nothing is being done to regulate(even in buildings such as this?) The basic fundemental safe installation of electrical wiring you would think is of paramount importance and common sense...but alas not in Thailand! How many of us notice plugs sparking when using them?Frightening to even think how many potential death traps are around us on a daily basis....bloody frightening!
Briggsy
I have a friend who is an electrical engineer. He enjoys goings to National Parks and will stay with his family in resort type accommodation. He takes a voltmeter with him and checks out the rooms each time.

Presuming you are talking about plugging an appliance in or out then any unswitched load, generally speaking, will cause the spark you have seen. No big deal. If you are used to outlet with a switch....the sparking still happens,,,you just can't see it.
mrfill
So the technicians knew about the dangerous circuitry and chose to do nothing about it, which makes them culpable. And the next time you're in Bangkok, notice how many locals avoid using handrails while using bridges.

MikeOboe57
So the technicians knew about the dangerous circuitry and chose to do nothing about it, which makes them culpable. And the next time you're in Bangkok, notice how many locals avoid using handrails while using bridges. It is very convenient to attach bundles of power cables with zip ties to the metal handrails of pedestrian flyovers. Saves the money for setting up an extra pole.
