Lite Beer
Phuket forest preserve almost wiped out Naraporn Tuarob PHUKET: The 5,000-rai Bang Kanoon Forest Preserve in Thalang District has been almost wiped out by encroachment, a meeting of officials chaired by Vice-Governor Jamreon Thippayapongthada heard yesterday (July 9).In the closed meeting it was revealed that just 794 rai of the land in the forest preserve – 16 per cent – is still untouched forest. The rest has been taken over, mostly for rubber plantations and other forms of farming.A total of 268 people now live inside the preserve, 17 of whom have papers showing some form of land ownership or occupations rights.Officials will now have to examine each of these papers to see whether the paper trail begins before or after the area was declared to be a forest preserve.Source: http://www.thephuketnews.com/phuket-forest-preserve-almost-wiped-out-40747.php -- Phuket News 2013-07-

Suffinator
Great information but what's the governments plan? Oh yes that would be finding another rug to sweep the dirt under. They still haven't done bugger all about all the other encroachment.

Popular Post bumpkin
Simple ! Un-encroach it . Demolish all buildings and remove all plantations, allow the land to revert to natural forest.
alphaflight
This is yet another taste of a corrupt system. All that matters is money yet again. Checking the papers will only confirm that too many were handed out for an envelope full of cash. The forests are almost gone, the Thai sea will be baron in 10 years (studies say), and the Asians are already fighting over their fresh water which is going quickly. No government willing to make or enforce any laws when money is paid. Just turn the other cheek. I'm curious to see how much face and pride the Thais will have in a decade, when they have to go to other countries and beg for food. Better hope Burma doesn't decide to cut off your electricity supply. I can already see the type of blame game that will ensue.......
Felt 35
100 years from now there are now land left to even produce what themselves need to eat, the same with China and India, then it will be the worlds greatest emigration to northern Europe and our grandchildren in Europe will end up with the problems which is in the start blocks here today and the rest will climate change take care of.
