"shooting" sunsets around CM - good spots?

Any keen photographers know good spots to shoot sunsets around Chiang Mai?

I have a motorbike so anywhere say with a 50 km radius would be fine.

Obviously the sun sets in the west so somewhere up in the western mountains might be good, but if anyone has a specific location or locations to check out, that would be great.

I actually prefer sunrises but I'm a terrible riser!! tongue.png

There is a viewpoint on the little road that leads to the Hmong village Chiang Klan. To get there go up to Doi Suthep carry on all the way up go past the Kings palace then turn right about 1km up the road you will see a little car park on the left. Its the best spot for a sunset pic near CM with views all the way to Doi Inthanon on a clear evening.

If you take the new San Kamphaeng Road out to the Buakkong community and then turn south for about 4 KM you can position yourself so it looks like nothing but rice fields and nature looking back to Doi Suthep, yet you still have that great red glow caused by the smog. The clouds back toward CM and the mountain this time of year also often make for some wild sun rays that time of day.

I am not sure if people are taking photos specifically off sunsets however I see a lot of photographers at a large area of land in Mae Hia near Doi Kham temple. It is a large area near the base of the mountain that gives great views and is popular with people walking, cycling and jogging as well as dig walkers. I am not sure of the name of the area other than to say it is a large square area with some rice field in the middle a few minutes from Doi Kham temple.

Right, except a sunset pic that features the actual sun would have to be taken facing the other way. (Where the mountain is.)

From the little hill standing over Wat Doi Saket where the multi-headed Erawan elephant and crystal ball are at.

If you're really keen, head out east beyond Mae Kampong (where the Flight of the Gibbon is at) and climb the mountain pass--views over the whole valley, including Doi Suthep and Chang Dao.

On the Samoeng loop, the Samoeng viewpoint. From Hang Dong, take the road to Samoeng, a few km before Samoeng take the right turn north towards Mae Rim, its a few km further on the left, marked by a big wooden sign and Sala overlooking the valley to the left.
