Hi

My ex wife has a friend who's brother, a UK national is in Chon Buri prision. She has asked me if possible to go and see him and get some items for him as you have to carry all your personal possession's around with you, sheets, pillows etc or they get taken by other inmates (charming).

I am over at the end of next month so wondering if anyone knows how to get a visit arranged? Or can you just turn up! I will take my TGF with me as well as she is up for a day trip and can assist with translation upon arrival to the prision and I want to ensure I leave!

Cheers

I have read of several charities running in the Pattaya area that frequently do jail visits. Maybe a thread search will yield the names or someone familiar with them will pick up on this thread. I reckon going along with them on one of their regular visits may bypass some of the bureaucracy involved.

If it all works out, please post again and let us know how the visit went and your thoughts and opinions.

I have visited someone in chonburi prison before, and had to be there very early to register, 7am. It then took more than two hours before the visit. Good idea to take your TGF to help in filling out forms. I believe visits are only on weekdays.

"She has asked me if possible to go and see him and get some items for him..."

There has been a recent change in some, maybe all, prisons. They no longer allow things to be brought to prisoners.

Not sure if the list of things is exhaustive, or not. It does include food items and anything with powders or liquids

They've had a big problem with stuff being smuggled into the prisons, so are taking steps to try to fix the problem.

Thanks everyone. My TGF is with me here in the UK at the mo so I will get the number and get her to call and find out ahead of us going over.

Apparently the guy was set up by the local mafia and has 9 more years to think about that. He is in a cell with70 in mates and one open viewing toilet. I said I would get some items if we can to make life a little more pleasant.

You can't take anything with you. All things have to be bought in the prison shop. You can fill in a list a the things you want to buy. The Chonburi prison is not very well organised and it's hard for visitors to see the inmates (you've to come early and wait long). The prison is also extremely dirty. If I would be him I would ask for a transfer to Pattaya (which is bad, but less bad).

That's an easy one ...

Probably many people whose partners live in Western countries have had a guest to visit. Probably many have had quests who have visited to long.

I asked for peoples experience on how they dealt with this.

It was not possible to ask my girlfriend because I did not wish to offend her by saying that her friend was not welcome here.

I was seeking a tactful and diplomatic answer ...

As for the prison question ...

The OP could easily receive his answer by getting a Thai speaker to telephone the Prison and simply ask them. The OP stated that he is taking his Thai GF, so, in my thinking, it would be logicial for her to make that telephone call.

Indeed, that is exactly what the OP decided to do ...

Thanks everyone. My TGF is with me here in the UK at the mo so I will get the number and get her to call and find out ahead of us going over.

Mine wasn't a negative answer.

Just that sometimes, the simplest answer is also the best answer.

I just pointed out the simplest solution.

The OP is not different from me at all.

To the OP, just arrive early 0700 or so. Then go and register and state who you wish to visit

Ideally you need a thai speaker with you, if you hope to hand over any "goodies" like decent

farang food etc. You will need to bribe a guard in order to get it delivered. In '91 I was

unfortunate enough to spend 5 days in chonburi, and when released I went back twice to visit.

I think it works like this.

1. Show up early (7.00am)

2. Register at the desk. Must have name of prisoner and your passport.

3. You can buy things at the prison shop. You can also deposit money into a prison bank account.

4. Wait and listen carefully for their named to be called.

5. Proceed to visiting area. Visits last 20 minutes, I think.

You shouldn't need to request a visit beforehand. Most Thai prisoners have someone visiting everyday to supply food and money.

My GF has spoken to the prison today and the guy said that I would need pre approval to visit as I am not a family member of the UK National being detained so I guess I need the " embassy, consulate and non governmental agency" to request the visit for me.
