Annoying Soi Cats!

We have been very lucky in this mooban, since our last one had a horrible soi dog problem.

The issue here is that when we moved in, 3 yrs ago, our lovely next door neighbors (thai family) had like 4 cats... ok, cute, furry, etc...

My daughter and I are both allergic to cats and dogs, so our home has never had animals - i make do with a wonderful pond and indoor aquarium.

Well, here we are, 3 yrs and an additional 14 cats later. Really, i asked him how many cats he had now and he laughed and said - i think 18.

well, it is getting to be too much for many neighbors as several have voiced their concern (hey, when thais start complaining to eachother, you KNOW it is bad!)....

my wife overhead husband and wife next door having a heated discussion about "well, they are YOUR cats"....

Anyways... cat poop, cat vomit and cat fleas are getting to me. (edit)... plus, they chase eachother up our trees and as a result, many of our beautiful orchids have gotten mangled! ARRRGGG

I have looked online at home remedies and i am not willing to get a dog.

So.. has anyone actually used any of these "pepper/lemon" mixes and gotten a good result.

i suspect that with rainy season here, any spray that is applied would have to be re-applied as often as the cats came back.

I even thought about having a "water scarecrow" sent from the states, but the wife said that would be too much for our thai neighborhood and would offend people. So..her culture, and i want to play nice, so no electronic water sprayer.

what to do? I want to be humane about it... but the neighbors are never going to spay their cats or "get rid" of them.

any sane and humane ideas would be appreciated...

I've read in some other places that putting good strong ammonia into one of those super water guns, and spraying them will leave a very long-lasting impression. Have never tried it myself, but might be worth it -

thanks chris... i do use a squirt gun whenever i see them and if they start crapping in the driveway (something they like to do periodically) i do scrub it down with either bleach or ammonia and that keeps them off

that particular spot for a month or so...

looking for a successful, repeatable long term solution... read about spreading dried lion dung around... maybe a trip to the zoo is in order?

Those cats are probably contaminating every patch of soil and garden with Toxoplasma Oocysts to infect most warm blooded animals with brain controlling/affecting parasite.

I would use olive oil in your squirt gun...works for me really well in my last stay

Kept the cats away and they had to go home and lick it all off it was win win

The other think I had with limited success with different cats was a ultra sound dog whistle it seems to irritate the hell of out some of them

Is this cat parasite causing people to commit suicide?

Might begin to explain crazy cat lady behavior

Link between Toxoplasma parasite and schizophrenia

It's only 600 baht lab test to get checked for antibody but not a lot can be done to treat it yet.

If a person is infected with Toxoplasma they are exempt from organ donation.

Ironically a lot of motorcycle fatalities have Toxoplasma. It's thought to slow reaction time and increase risky behavior.

So a third of us have a parasite that causes schizophrenia according to these articles, but less than one per cent of the population develops it. Schizophrenia is also influenced by gender, age, genetics and so on. Don't know if I believe the cat theory, but I'm still going to wash my veggies more thoroughly!

Hi, from plant suppliers / markets etc, there is a substance you can buy in liquid form, which you dilute in water and sprinkle around your garden, this really works! It stops them shitting, It may take a while and keep using it, i'm not sure it prevents them coming in the garden, but messing yes. Also works for dogs.

I was having big problems and now nothing, the road outside my house and pot plants and garden are free of shit.

Sorry can't tell you the name, this sticker has faded on my bottle.

Just remember that lees cats = more rats. Be careful what you wish for.

If you have a cat allergy (have you had this checked and confirmed?) you are in a bind. Got neighbors with dogs? Invite them around for a pissing contest. No joke.

don't know how much confirmation is needed... but if my kid or I pick up and/or pet dogs or cats... almost every single time eyes get itchy, puff up and sometimes even swell shut...depending on how much time spent with animal, how long fur was, etc...

and just for the record... when in usa, i was skin tested and yes, allergic to pet dander.

one neighbor, also very stressed by this issue, went to large pet store by tesco/lotus on SH 11.... got a plastic bottle of stuff they said to dilute and spray around... he just did this yesterday and is next door to cat house, as i am...and it is pouring cats and dogs here in sansai noi now, so lets see how the stuff holds up after a rain!

Hi, in the uk I have the same problem with them messing in our garden, but we have in our shops garlic spray which I use with the jet option on the nozzle, very effective on soil or anywhere they mess and a jet on them if you can manage it with you neighbour seeing might deter them further. I've read that you can make your own by crushing many garlic gloves and adding to water in a spray bottle. I can safely say (as a vegetable grower) if I got my hands on one I might be capable of horrid things. Good luck

And, in addition to the coolant for your car, you may as well buy some "neutral" paracetamol in powder...mix it with drinking water...

If you do not want to go extreme, cats hate the smell of mothballs (naphtalene).

Forget about amonia and Javel...it attracts them!

Why would having a sprayer in your yard to keep other people's pets out of your garden offend your Thai neighbor? I googled water scarecrow they do not seem to harm the animals in anyway. Additionally they seem to work very well. So they do no hurt the animals and they work. Which can not be said about the fleas and the feces from the cats. Too many times Thais expect you to say Maipen Rai to their behavior and let it go. If their behavior possess a health risk to you and your family then why should you?

I strongly poo-poo the idea.
