Legal to work on Ed visa?

Featured Replies

Hi

I've seen a BA Tefl course advertised in Bangkok, (Thongsookinternational), offering both a degree and tefl certification over three years. My question is about the related visa and work permit issues. They say that you get an ED visa and that you are able to work while you study, although they state casually that technically you should be on a B visa. My understanding is that you are not legal to work unless you have a B visa which then enables you to get a work permit. Is this a scam? and are you in reality no more legit doing this course than teaching without a degree (obviously you have the benefit of the course content) or have the rules been relaxed in relation to this/other similar courses to get teachers legit. They say they are MOE accredited.

Thanks

You are not allowed to work on an ED visa.

Only a work permit allows you to legally work and that will not be issued on an ED-visa.

What they might be offering is an internship during your study, that would be a part of the study and as such is allowed. (but must be registered)

I agree,same same

As said a work permit is what allows work - not the visa. The ED visa is actually issued for the work/study as listed by MFA website - but normally a work permit for other type employment would not be issued.

to study, to come on a work study tour or observation tour , to participate in projects or seminars , to attend a conference or training course , to study as a foreign Buddhist monk (Category "ED")

Thanks for the clarification. As i suspected, all is not as it seems in LOS.

Hopefully that will happen more often in these visa related threads where some people post clearly inaccurate info that only muddies the water.
