Thai & Cambodian hospitals to be paired up for better patient care

BANGKOK, 24 July 2013 (NNT) – The health ministries of Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to jointly care for people who reside along the two countries' border area, while Thailand has also proposed it will support Cambodia in establishing a universal healthcare system.

Minister of Public Health Pradit Sintawanarong revealed that the two public health agreements were reached at a recent conference between Thailand and Cambodia, which was held to discuss human resource development along the border of the two countries and transportation linkages.

The healthcare collaborations include emergency trauma care and the development of patients transfer between hospitals in provinces along the border. Concerning the latter, hospitals in Thailand and Cambodia will be paired up to better facilitate patients from both sides of the border.

Regarding the issue of health care for Cambodian patients who utilize health services on the Thai side, Dr. Pradit said the Ministry of Public Health will see to them being charged at affordable rates and receiving care under humanitarian principles.

He said Thailand has proposed that for the long term, Cambodia establish a universal healthcare system to improve its people's access to healthcare. This proposal has been well-received by Cambodia, and Thailand will provide all the know-how that it has in support of the initiative.

Will there be free treatment for cynicism?! Seriously, I wish this one well.

Getting smashed up and taken to a Thai hospital is scary. Being transferred to Cambodia is nightmare stuff.

I can imagine myself waking up screaming "NO! NO! Not Laos!"

I gather you are scared of the nice money grabbing bills presented to you by the very nice private hospitals?

That is, if they will not send you away before starting a treatment because they are not certain if you have insurance?

"Thailand has also proposed it will support Cambodia in establishing a universal healthcare system."

Because the ones PT and the DL previous parties have set up here work so well!

A bit of context may help.

I have never had trouble from private hospitals in Ubon. They seem to treat on a promise to pay only. Perhaps for something really major I would have to wheel out a credit card, but two times (the bills for my wife's caeserian and two days stay to treat pneumonia for me) I was asked if I had insurance, I said no, they said how are you going to pay, I said cash, they said fine!

One sure thing about Thai health care: it will never be as cheap as it used to be. The days of Thailand being cheap are well and truly gone.

This sharing of resources cross border might afford some slight relief, but that is all. If you are HIV positive in Si Sa Ket the nearest doctor who really knows what he is doing is in Khon Kaen.

That is just a personal point of view because you have been here so long.coffee1.gif

Many people coming here say it is cheap today.smile.png
