Coral reefs near Ao Phrao blackened after oil spill

RAYONG, 1 August 2013 (NNT) – Local authorities report that the majority of coral reefs near Ao Phrao Beach of Samet Island which has been devastated by the oil spill have turned black.

Chief of Khao Laem Ya-Mu Ko Samet National Park Sumet Saithong said that divers and marine biologists who inspected the reefs near Ao Phrao Beach reported that over 70 percent of the corals have blackened as they are covered by remains of crude oil resulting from the use of chemical dispersants.

Mr Sumet revealed that he has lodged a complaint with the local police over the environmental damages caused by the oil leak.

PTT Global Chemical (PTTGC), the company responsible for the leak, earlier promised that the bay would be cleansed by this weekend. About 600 soldiers, volunteers and workers from PTTGC have been involved in the cleanup.

Tourism operators on Samet Island have been severely affected as many are seeing a 50 percent drop in diving tour bookings. They indicated that as one of the most popular diving sites located next to Ao Phrao has also been affected by the oil spill, a number of tourists have been turned away to other destinations such as Hua Hin.

Truly sad and shocking. Will this be the dispersal agents that PTT promised they were not going to use near the beaches and coral. The spokesman from PTT who said the coral was too deep for the dispersals and oil to affect!! Some of these senior Management should do jail time over this.

Apparently tonight the boss of PTT has apologised and said everything will be back to normal in 1-2 months !! They said 1-2 days on Tuesday !! I guess at the end of 2 months they will be saying that in 1-2 years everything will be ok. They cannot just man-up and tell the frakking truth then at least some proper plans and corrective actions could be instigated! Thailand NEEDS to know how bad this is and it is a damn sight more than 50 tons.

Black Coral Bay .... sounds exotic when you come from Sunderland. tongue.png

Newcastle sounds exotic when you come from Sunderland! biggrin.png

It is as well! I was born on the dark side (Newcastle) and admit that in many ways the city is superior to Sunderland. However, the barcodes (Newcastle United) bring the place down.

But with the white sand and black oil, 'Magpie Bay' has a real ring to it ;)

It seems they are taking a page from the BP playbook: Deny, deny, and slowly admit the truth as it becomes unavoidable.
