PM calls on all parties to seek reconciliation

BANGKOK, Aug 3 – The government will invite various civilian groups to a meeting next week to exchange views which may lead to political reforms and end conflicts, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said.

She made an overture in an apparent attempt to cool the political temperature in light of the government’s enforcement of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in Bangkok on August 1-10, a planned rally on August 4 by the People’s Army Against the Thaksin Regime protesting against the House debate of the amnesty bill and a tentative debate of the bill on August 7 by the Lower House.

The prime minister said in a televised address on Friday night that she and the government have sincerely and patiently promoted unity in the country to build an atmosphere of reconciliation and trust among people with different political opinions.

It’s a regret that some people wanted to organise their movement on the street without accepting the rules of democracy, and indulge in provocative activities in order to overthrow the elected government and call for a coup d’etat, she said.

She said an open forum will be launched to garner opinions and feedback from all quarters in society to jointly find a resolution for the country that is also acceptable internationally.

Her proposal for a "sustainable way out for Thailand" would be involved the different groups of people, including the government, senators, political parties, the United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship, the People's Alliance for Democracy, independent agencies, the private sector and academics.

She would not commit to if the controversial amnesty bill would be withdrawn from Parliament but merely said it would be up to the government whip and Parliament to decide.

She admitted that she was concerned with the anti-government rally and called on protesters to make use of Parliament forum in discussing the issue.

Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnok said the authorities will strictly follow universal principles in dealing with protesters while the ISA is invoked.

The ISA is in force in Bangkok’s three districts of Pomprab Satrupai, Phra Nakhon and Dusit, where major government buildings are located. The protesters, however, planned to hold a rally in front of Lumpini Park.

“We have received reports that the protesters have clearly declared their determination to hold a rally to overthrow the government. That’s why we have to reinforce guards at Parliament House and Government House,” he said.

Opposition Democrat spokesman Chavanond Intarakomalyasut said the prime minister knows that the debate of the amnesty bill will lead to conflict but she was ready to take the risk in an attempt to whitewash criminal culprits including ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. (MCOT online news)

Why are there convoys of buses filled with red shirts, that have police escorts coming to Bangkok, from the north? A convoy of 10 buses was seen south of Salaburi yesterday at approximently 1700 hours.

Reconciliation, she really is practicing the talk. Like I'm off to Africa on a trip, by the way where is Africa ?

Getting people out of jail for breaking the law back in 2010 is not reconciliation. The majority of the population would not even contemplate committing crimes like that so why should terrorists (or terrorizors of others) get off? do the crime do the time.

The courts could be more lenient. If there is not sufficient evidence, then those jailed should be released. If someone committed arson, damaged other people's property, attacked someone, etc, then they should be tried for the crime they committed.

During the “PM Yingluck Meets the People” program, Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said she has assigned Deputy Prime Minister Phongthep Thepkanjana and PM's Office Minister Varathep Ratanakorn to invite around 50-100 related agencies to the Government House to exchange views as she wants to see participation from all sides in order to find an ultimate solution to the conflicts, which will lead to a political reform of the country. However, she said it will have to be conducted upon the country’s conditions and in a way acceptable to the international community.

The Premier said she wanted to see cooperation from all sides to get the country out of this predicament. She has affirmed that the upcoming forum is not for the government to buy more time, while urging everyone to open their minds and talk. She added that the forum is not meant for the government, but for the nation as a whole.

Lastly, she said the government will only summon all related agencies, while the chairman and the committee of the meeting will have to be decided by the participants.

She really is shameless (assuming that she understands what she's reading).

Reconciliation, great idea for talking and political show Ms. Yingluck. BUT not easy to reconcile with incompetence and corruption. I suggest that you start the reconcilitation by resigning and calling for a new election without Puea Thai in the running. Time to clean house and give new people a chance before Thailand's current downward spiral results created by Puea Thai ends in a fatal crash landing. Give Thailand a chance to survive!

When will this woman finally realize - nay, concede! - that her frequent ramblings about "achieving reconciliation" will continue to ring hollow and hypocritical as long as her government pushes that amnesty bill, which a vast majority of the population has recognized as what it factually is, a poorly disguised attempt at white-washing her brother?

The muppet PM Yingluck should really just keep her mouth shut. She is nothing but an embarassment, to herself and the country.

No one is in a better position than Khun Yingluck herself to make the first move in seeking reconciliation.

Step one........ ask her brother, the primary source of all the conflict, to make himself scarce.

After all, he's done it before.

Let's see if she leave Thailand before the 6th. Shinawatra style. What about Mr. T daughter? Is she in Thailand?

Sounds like a good plan to me. The best way to kick it off would be to show her sincerity by replacing a few of the bumbling fools in her cabinet with capable Democrats. Then use her authority to block any amnesty bill that involves making her brother a free man with no charges hanging over his head.

She could also start spending less time traveling and more time in the house when it is in session. Another big plus would be to hire new speech writers. If she is speaking in English to a primarily English speaking audience practice the speech before she gives it.

How ever she has shown no determination towards reconciliation until it is becoming obvious to her brother that they need a new plan and there by has not done any thing to prove her sincerity.

So one would be led to believe that as it is a PTP government she will have mostly PTP supporters in the conference.

Official red shirt meeting in Don Muang today. Heard some of them might stay overnight. Apparently nothing to do with the anti-govt protesters. The ones that had gathered to protect the parliament have already been moved out.

democracy...rule of law ...bla bla bla...if she wants reconciliation, Thaksin should come back and serve his time, even if it's just one day....the last thing an amnesty will do it bring about reconciliation.
