Privacy Hedge

Featured Replies

I want to buy something to make a hedge around two sides of my garden(about 25m).

Ideally, it will be fast-growing and about 2m high.

Can anyone recommend what to buy, how to plant it etc.

Thanks

NN

Anything fast growing will get to more than 2 meters high and need pruning 2/3 times a year. Lantana (google) is maybe what you are looking for, different colours available.

Personally I like, some of the Hibiscus varieties.... Easy to grow, although what ever plant you use, some shearing during initial growth needed to get them to bush out, the same as Lantana perhaps shear two or three times a year.... With some TLC and fertilizer I have grown these from cuttings (one to two feet long, pencil sized stems) and they have reached 2 metres within a year or so.

Here are two types of Hibiscus ("Shaba" in Thai) that I find perform well... There is a peachy pink form of this type too... thumbsup.gif

Or the common variety...

This is one of the several colours of Lantana, Cooked suggested... make sure to get the upright growing type, not the creeping type! wink.png

Good plant for attracting butterflies.... does well in dry soil once established, but from my experience does not like sitting in water (wet feet) for extended periods.

How high will this grow?

Well, about 2 meters! Still needs pruning though. They grow readily from seed so try not to let them seed out all over the place.

A quick google search found this. ... Looks to me from this image is what the Thai's call Jasmine. Rather slow growing from my experience, but popular plant for the Thai's.

I also planted something called Puang Sed which is seemingly fast growing and has orange flowers. It's like an climbing ivy.

I am going to take a wild guess on this, it is probably Campsis grandiflora ... lovely vine, but will need a bit of controlling!

nothing really came up using the English version of the Thai name... so working on memory of orange flowered vines! wink.png

Is this it?

Round us in Prachin there are loads of nurseries producing vaste quantities of hedging about 80% being one variety.

Can't tell you what its called but here is a few picturespost-2215-0-94510000-1393558463_thumb.jppost-2215-0-25415400-1393558527_thumb.jppost-2215-0-06269700-1393558574_thumb.jp of it being grown for sale.

That would be 'sai gowlee" as in Korean. I forget the latin name.

That's it. I also bought some with white flowers.

Bumping this thread. I stayed at a resort in Vietnam and they had lightweight privacy hedges between the villas. The height was around 5 foot and the leaf was very small and needle-like. It appeared dense from a distance but quite sparse up close. The main thing it enabled air flow and didn't take up great space in depth. From the attached pictures you can see it is a single-row stand.
