Mystery tree / palm

Featured Replies

Got this tree a few days ago here in CM. Lady didn't know the name of it. And I've already forgotten the Thai name for it.

Thought it was a Pandanus or Madagascar palm. But after many a google search it is still a mystery tree.

Anyone a clue?

Pandanus, palm like, but not strictly a palm. There are 100's of similar species.Has fruit like a pineapple, slow growing but very hardy. I'm sure Mr Google will have it somewhere.I used to grow them. Very popular with people near the ocean as they can take salt winds

Type of yucca ?

Looking at Pandanus roots they are completely different.

CM Sally, a Yucca ?, mmm. Will take a look, thanks.

Looks like it just may be a Yucca / Joshua tree.

Thanks Sally.

This is a from the dracanea family. yours may be a draco one, "dragon tree" but not sure from the pisture.

Dracaena Loureiri / Thai Dracaena. ( Jan Pha [ จันผา ] )

(Which is not a palm of course.)

Yes, this is correct. We have many of them. They don't like a lot of water, beware.

Cheers for the info everyone.

Yes we were told when they were putting it in not too much water.

Winnie,

Any idea what it means in English?

The wife says moon cliff, or moon slope.

My daughter says moon forest. lol

It looks very similar to a New Zealand cabbage tree or the proper name of cordyline australis. Funny how you can have similar looking plants but from different families/species. Still its a nice looking plant

Extremely odd place to plant that. It will look more or less like it does now forever and will never provide shade, which is something worth having from a plant in the middle of a small yard.

Wasn't planted for shade nor growth. We were told it's very slow growing and thats fine. Or else we could have bought an older one.

Looks great where it is.

Our house is properly insulated and has verandah overhangs all around it. Keeps cool year round.

Well done DaamNam, it is a good looking tree. Putting a large shade tree (there really are not small ones) in that space would have been foolish. What you have is in good proportion to the size of the space and house and will remain so for many years.

It looks like a Yucca, not of the " Dracaena " family..

I think your wife is right!

Forest is ป่า, different word. (different consonant, different tone).

@ Dante99, cheers mate. We think so too. Very happy indeed.

@ MauGR1, it's been confirmed from Dracaena family, not Yucca.

@ Winnie, cheers mate. Whatever it's called it doesn't really matter.
