....I do find it easier to walk away from a smoker if his smoke offends me than to expect him to walk away from me. It's best to avoid trouble than to expect it to avoid you.

I think the opposite.

I go to a restaurant to enjoy a meal. I'll sit at my table, eat quietly and not disturb other diners.

I go to a bar to have a few drinks with my mates. I don't disturb other drinkers.

If that's good enough for me, why can't smokers give me the same amount of consideration?

If the restaurant or bar is enclosed, is it such a burdon for a smoker to walk outside for a cigarette?

The smoker would take about three minutes to smoke a cigarette outside, but it takes at least ten minutes for his smoke to dissipate if he smokes inside.

Multiply one smoker by four or five smokers and you have a very unpleasant, unwelcome and unhealthy smoke screen.

Statistics indicate that smokers are a dying breed. (literally :o ) So if non-smokers are now the majority, non-smokers should stand up for their rights and expect clean breathing air wherever they go.

Rather than meekly walking away, non-smokers should become more vocal towards the intrusive smoking habits of smokers.

Whilst in some regards I feel sorry for those who are hooked on the cravings, it was their choice to experiment with tobacco in the first place and I don't see why I should pay a price for their indulgences.

Well MM, you've seen the attitude of many smokers; they are faintly amused by non-smokers who express annoyance and don't mind at all that you are uncomfortable and distressed. Business owners who allow smoking won't change their rules on the spot because you are unhappy. All that happens is that you get angry or stressed, your blood pressure goes up and you still breath in the smoke. There's more in the world that needs attention for me to want to spend my leisure time trying to change the rules of a restaurant.

If a smoker, say, in the street bothers me I just take as many paces as it needs to get away from the smoke. I don't like it but it's easier to do that than have an upsetting row with him or her or, increasingly these days, risk being on the end of a bunch of fives because I have complained.

In any event, it's many years since smoke in a restaurant, or even a bar, came to my attention. The people who complain so strongly must either seek out these bars or live in a very small world of heavy smokers.

Just one other point from what MM has written. Smoking, I believe, is not a true chemical addiction. It's a habit and there are ways of breaking habits as many smokers are learning. Very heavy smokers often have deep emotional issues and quitting smoking isn't really on the cards for them. Furthermore, many older smokers might say that they were brought up in a time when smoking was acceptable and, as we might say today, 'Cool'. Tobacco advertisements were everywhere, public figures smoked and you saw smoking in movies and on the tv. People were conditioned to become smokers and, after, decades, it's not at all easy for many of them to quit, even if they are brave enough to try.

So, let's show some tolerance and understanding and pay more attention to our own individual failings than to those of others. Alternatively, if anyone really wants to be judgemental about others and go on a moral crusade, have a go at those who abuse drugs and alcohol.

Bring it on...the sooner the better.

Enclosed restaurants should all be smoke free. There is nothing worse than trying to find your pork chop through a thick fog of tobacco smoke. :o

Hotel lifts are also a must for smoke free, but you still get the arrogant smoker who believes it his/her right to fill the small space with vile smelling smoke.

Camel cigarette smokers are the worst. :D

Discos and go-go bars should be next on the list for clean air.

..........and what is ever done about those b**stards who light up in the movie theatre ??

:D Lifts...I agree, any lifts, movie theatres same, restaurants...I agree, I'm a smoker and I confess that I don't like somebody smoking while I am eating, but discos and go-go's??? :D

BTW, pork chops are unhealthy...Take care

An interesting observation.

The content of the link that you posted seems quite clear to me. Which words can't you understand?

I don't understand what you mean by the violin image. Are you a musician and you want to entertain us? :D

I personally do not aggree with smoking in a closed resturant, open air i see no problem. i am a smoker and also do not like in my face whilst trying to eat, so resturants are definatly out for me.

In a pub though i think it's a bit over the top, i have no objection to people opening up stricked no smoking bars and attract that clientel, i, as many, will not enter, some of my friends do not smoke and thats great but they say that if they go to a pub, they expect to smell smoke as most of my friends, and basically all my family smoke, they don't care, they adjust.

If i am asked to please blow the smoke in some other direction, no drama. if i am asked to leave because sombody dosen't like it then they can go jump. If you see me smoking then don't sit near me, change venues for all i care, but the pub is a great place for me and my smoking and non-smoking friends to hang out catch up and have a good time.

I beleive that although most may not like to admit it, most all have friends and/or family that smoke, would you waste a good night with them because of this? i Talk to my mates (non-smokers) about this and they laugh, they wouldn't destroy a friendship/relationship/business deal because i or someone else smoked.

Thats my thought anyway. :o

In the past dinners could take a long time. Eat, smoke in between courses and afterwards.

Today, it's 'hurry up' with the food and let's go somewhere else.

Good for the restaurants that can sell the table once more.
