Thai officials not involved in missing visa stickers

BANGKOK, Aug 23 - Thailand’s Foreign Ministry has confirmed that no Thai officials were involved in the disappearance of 300 visa labels from the Thai embassy in the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur.

Foreign Ministry deputy permanent secretary Natthawut Phothisaro told a news briefing today that the embassy asked the Immigration Bureau to take legal action against those responsible. The preliminary investigation, however, has not yet established that five Malaysian staff employed at the embassy were involved in the missing visa labels.

Mr Natthawut also affirmed no Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials were involved in the scandal, but it is the task of the Immigration Bureau to carry out any further investigation. However he instructed consular staff to strictly follow storage and disbursement procedures, while asserting that the system is not to blame for the missing visa labels. (MCOT online news)

How does he know? To step out and say that so quickly makes you wonder..know someone else who was quick to do that. Why not wait for the final investigation so one doesn't need to put their foot in their mouth?

Yes, and that knee-jerk statement is compounded by the fact that the Thai staff are obviously above suspicion. In contrast, however, as regards the Malaysian staff, the statement says:

"The preliminary investigation, however, has not yet established that five Malaysian staff employed at the embassy were involved in the missing visa labels".

This seems to suggest that the Malaysian staff are presumed guilty until proven innocent...!

Abrogating responsibility is an integral part of 'Thainess'. Diplomacy at its' best.

A real investigation would involve keeping quiet about the incident. If the system really works, they will know the numbers and put a watch on those visas at points of entry, interview the passport holder and trace the source of the labels from there.

"while asserting that the system is not to blame for the missing visa labels."

And how exactly can the system not be blamed? Isn't security and accountability part of the system?

To give any credibility to this assertion. please include "enforcement" of any security/accountability of the system, IS to blame. But that would be a blanket charge that would apply to the entire system, as it is being used in Thailand at present.

Take the Police, civil servents, and politicians out of the system and there is a chance of honesty, being found, somewhere.

I think there must be something lost in translation according to the term "involved."

If no official was involved, who the heck is in charge to keep these visa lables under thight wraps, and make sure only authorised persons get their hands on them, the Nigarian cleaning woman?

I wonder if this clown realises what he's said ? No Thais are involved, the system is ok and it hasn't been established if the locally recruited Malaysian staff are implicated, this is a real whodunnit.

The Immigration Bureau has been instructed to take legal action against those involved but if no Thais are involved it must be the Malaysians and Thailand has no jurisdiction.

It's better to keep your mouth shut and appear to be a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.

However as we all know Thai officials just love to talk.

Just a thought and perhaps someone will correct me but when this story broke was the finger not initially pointed at the Malaysians with the comment they had been very careful and clever.

I wonder if they have been interviewed and have implicated Thais at the embassy which might mean the story will be downplayed and allowed to disappear without any explanation as to how these stickers sprouted legs and walked out.

I think you don't know what the word "legally" means. Perhaps you were going for the similarly sounding word "illegally"? smile.png

You could have made your point without sounding like a racist bigot. The embassy is staffed by Thai and Malaysian nationals. No Nigarian working there in any capacity.

Nigarian as in nigga or Nigerian, you are still out of line.

Understand your point, but the facts are that the majority nationality, according to today's BKK Post article, that utilised the stolen visa stickers to enter Thailand were Nigerian. Possible this is what the poster was referring to.

.....not only infallible and of high moral conduct...but psychic, too....

....reminds me of a 'murder for robbery' announcement without a shred of evidence...

(...by the way, where is the update on the forced confession by the driver that he recently retracted...)

They were able to say no officials were involved because it was some cousins that dropped by for a while who did the heist! Seems would have to know who did it in order to say who didn't.
