Where to Buy Cinnamon from Ceylon?

Featured Replies

I'm looking to buy ceylonese cinnamon powder or sticks, I'm not interested in the Thai or Chinese products because they contain too much coumarin.

I can't find it anywhere in Chiang Mai where I live but I'll be in Bangkok next wekened for a few days, any ideas where I might find it or might try?

Thanks in adavnce.

Ceylon?? Seriously ?

Yes!

There's two types of cinnamon, the orginal variety that was found in Ceylon and a secondary variety that is found abundantently in China, SE Asia and of course in Thailand.

The difference between the Ceylonese variety and the rest is that cinnamon from Ceylon has very low coumarin content, the alternatives from China etc carry a very high coumarin content and are disturbingbly dangerous in anything other than small amounts.

So if all you want is to use cinnamon to sprinkle on your cappo. or to include in you baking, cinnamon from anywhere will work well.

But if you want to use cinnamon as an aid to reducing blood glucose levels or for any of the other benefits it's useful for, the added coumarin in Chinese cinnamon makes it a dangerous proposition.

I'd include some links but you'll forgive me, I don't have time to do that. A quick Google search on coumarin risks and cinnamon will however verify what I've said here.

About three months ago I was looking for Ceylon Cinnamon just like you. It is not available in Thailand, because it's several times the price like the cheap stuff which is sold here, but I found an online business which sells. I bought it here. Shipping is pretty fast, it was delivered to me via DHL. It is a bit coarsely grounded, but it's the real thing.

Excellent, thank you. Any problems getting it through Thai Customs?

Yes, I do understand what you mean, as I was looking for the Ceylonese cinnamon too. It's not found locally and I had to place a mail order on a UK website that sells stuff from Ceylon, including teas, curry powders, etc. Here's their website link. Check them out. I'm not related to the people who runs this mail order business.

Thanks, I had seen that site but was hoping to find it in BKK, sounds like I may not.

The question now is whether Thai Customs will have a field day with any order I buy or whether they'll even let it through at all, anyone?

I believe there is an 'Indian Section' adjacent to Yaowarat. Good chance you may find it there. Maybe other BKK residents could be more precise about the location.

Reading other threads about shipping stuff into Thailand, it would seem shipping by normal post gives less (or none) customs hassle. Any stuff shipped thru courier service are declared to customs for clearance by the courier companies.

Hope you get your cinnamon.

I know where you are talking about but you're really looking at a pretty basic selection of spices etc, I've struggled to find stuff for a curry there. This stuff is exotic even by London standards, think its main use is as a health supplement so chances are it's going to have to be mail order.

I had no problem with Thai customs. It was here within 4 days. Whenever I buy something from foreign countries I have it addressed to my wife's name, that may help a little.
