Democrats to join 12 anti-govt groups to block amnesty bill
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- The Democrat Party will join 12 other political groups in their efforts to try and stop the government from passing the amnesty bill, MP Nipit Intarasombat said.

The groups include the People's Army to Overthrow Thaksin Regime, the White Maskers, Santi Asoke and the Green Group led by Suriyasai Katasila, he said.

Nipit added that the groups believe the amnesty bill will be considered in its third reading in early October, but launching a protest at that time might be too late and inappropriate because the premier will be submitting the law for royal endorsement at that time.

The Democrats have sworn to do what they can to block the bill from being passed in Parliament and will hold rallies to inform the public about what could happen should the law be passed, he said.

The Democrats said it will mobilise at least 100,000 people along with participants from other groups, and they believe the government may decide to negotiate.

Nipit added that the Democrat Party had learned that PM Yingluck Shinawatra has plans to dissolve the House before holding new polls later this year once key laws, such as the charter amendment, the Bt2-trillion loan and amnesty bills, are passed.
