I came in on a one-year non immigrant visa last week.. but I've got to go out again somewhere between September 6-10. Will my visa renew three months all over again? It seems like a waste (using two weeks for three months) so am I better to get a re-entry permit? If so, how do I do that?

If you have a multi-entry visa each entry provides a "permission to stay" of 90 days. At the end of each 90 day period you must leave. Return and you will get another 90 day stay whilst the visa is valid.
