For personal reasons I am contemplating giving notice to leave my current employment. Apart from Visa fees this will have no negative impact on my school as there are other teachers who have expressed a desire for my job.

What I want to know is - have there ever been reports of issues with Thai bank accounts after leaving employment? I want to be sure I won't have any funds seized or accounts frozen. Maybe this seems unlikely, but I am quite new here. I intend on remaining in Thailand on a tourist visa so wish to keep the accounts to save on the transaction fees from using a foreign account.

In terms of VISA, am I right in assuming that I should have no trouble in acquiring a 60 day tourist VISA when I have records of having worked in this country?

The only thing that breaking yor contract will do is that you will need to cancel your work permit an permission to stay (if on an extension of stay absed on employement) on your last day of employement, at labour and immigration respectively.

Technically the school could sue you in civil court for damages, but that is not going to be very likely. I have never heard of such case.

Getting a torist visa or maybe even a double in Laos, would not be a problem.

but if in terms of your contract the employer had paid for things like WP's, flights, accomadation etc and with in the contract there was a provision which stated you had to remain employed for X period of time, and you gave notice prior to this point, the employer could technically sue for the amounts it had cost them to bring you to Thailand, but all they could sue you for is the costs they had incurred pro-rata, nothing else

No problems with bank account, no problems getting tourist visa. Maybe a courtesy to inform your school, usually in contract 30 days written notice, but not always. They do not live up to their contracts why should you. They would get rid of you in a moments notice if it suited them.

But as posted if your on extension of stay your stay ends at the end of employment although your visa may be valid a lot longer.

Two items:

-- If you're concerned about the bank account(s) how about opening up one or two new ones now, while you're still employed, easy to do since you have a WP. Altho, a WP is not always required to do so.

-- If you're going to apply for a TOURIST visa, I'd suggest not showing your prior work here, that might lead the Thai ConOff to deny the visa because they might, just might, think you're intending to work while on it. Not allowed on a Tourist visa. Should be no problem getting such without the documentation.
