NGO group mulls legal support for villagers
The Sunday Nation

LOEI: -- The head of Northeast's NGO Coordinating Committee on Development, Suwit Kularpwong, may consult the Lawyers Council of Thailand and the National Human Rights Commission regarding legal aid for villagers in six villages of tambon Khao Luang in Loei's Wang Saphung district.

The villagers have built a concrete fence at the Ban Na Nong Bong intersection, blocking the entrance to a gold mine since September 5, in protest against Thung Kham Co's alleged plan to expand its gold-mining activity without allowing local community participation.

The company lodged a police complaint on September 10 against protest leader Samai Pakmee and others for property intrusion by blocking its road and damaging its road surface. The company also accused them of threatening company staff, said Wang Saphung investigator Pol Captain Winai Nakhonkwang. The company said it would file a civil lawsuit claiming Bt15 million compensation per day, he added.

However, Samai said that the fence was built on public space, hence it did not intrude on the company property as accused, and that the villagers have been suffering from bad health and pollution caused by the mining operations.

Phuket Opinion: The 90-day hassle

Anywhere but here: our trimonthly diaspora. Image: Phuket Gazette

Having completed the bureaucratic rigmarole of obtaining a one-year work permit and a one-year non-immigrant B visa, I am soon to embark on my first quarterly “visa run” to have my passport stamped at the Ranong border control office. As a consequence, I have been mulling over the reasons why such a trip is necessary and I confess, I am at a loss.

INCOME TAX
The singles oppose higher taxes: Poll

BANGKOK: -- The Nation Nearly half of Thais insist that they will not get married even if the government raises taxes on the singles, according to NIDA Poll.

The respondents, 49.24 per cent, said they are willing to pay higher taxes rather than entering a wed lock.

The poll, conducted during September 12-14 and covering 1,249 legally-single respondents, showed that only 27.62 per cent of the respondents said that they would quicken their marriage decisions if the singles are to pay higher taxes. 11.69 per cent said they would defy the rule and campaign for a fight among the singles. 4.48 per cent said they would find a pseudo spouse to avoid taxes.

In another category of the poll, the majority of Thais, 90.79 per cent, opposed the proposed levy of income taxes on the singles, citing privacy violation, according to the NIDA poll.

They said that the progressive tax rates, based on individual income, remains proper.

The minority, 4.32 per cent, agreed with the proposal, saying that this will encourage marriage and increase the government’s tax revenue.

Assoc Prof Dujduan Phanthumavin, a lecturer of NIDA’s School of Social and Environmental Development, personally believed that if the proposal becomes law, it could pose some social problems. For example, will this affect single parents whose expenses are already high? Will the third sex be allowed to registered marriage?

If the objective is to increase birth rate and workforce, higher taxes are not a good solution as this could encourage tax evasion, she said.

She noted that to cope with the ageing society, a better solution is to help people prepare for the retirement life. Meanwhile, new technology can replace some workers.

RT@tulsathit: Both ASTV & Matichon are playing up warnings by ex-Constitution Court chief Vasant that YL govt may have violated charter repeatedly.

RT@tulsathit: Vasant's "Constitution traps" include amnesty bill, rice project, water management plan and failure to report govt work to Parliament.

RT@tulsathit: Rice pledging scheme may have violated fair business practices that govt's supposed to guarantee, Vasant said.

RT@tulsathit: On failing to report to Parliament, it's pointed out that govt controls House majority, so it can't blame House for not setting aside time.

RT@tulsathit: On water management plan, Vasant said slow progress may have exceeded constitutional deadline for fulfilling legislative commitment.
