Positive Thai Role Models in TV and Film

Featured Replies

The western world has begun to show more and more non-sterotypical gay characters in movies, TV, books and movies. Now also there are more openly gay politicians as well. I have lived in Thailand for over 7 years now and don't know of any parallels here. Do non-lisping, non-katooey, non-overly camp examples of gay people exist here in Thailand?

I began thinking about this because there is a new singer who is gay from the U.S. who also has produced two videos which are gay-themed.

To your first question: Yes, they exist. In fact, I believe they are the majority of MSMs, but you don't see them exactly because they don't act stereotypically.

Oh, and we use the term "MSM" over here in Asia, i.e. "men having sex with men", rather than "gay men". This doesn't mean to reduce gay men to sexuality, but it does mean that it is not as clear-cut as in the west whether you are gay. Men identifying themselves as straight may have no problem having gay sex over here. So what is the meaning of "straight"?

Your second part (not really a question) is two videos of an apparently gay US singer. What I find interesting is that many of the extras are beautiful sexy girls. We didn't use to see that in gay-themed videos. It shows that the videos are not only aimed at gay men but also straight men. That's good.
