choei choei

Featured Replies

can someone explain me the various meanings of the word "choei choei" and when/how it gets used (and written in thai, i tried but failed).

example:

Q: is he a good doctor? reply: choei choei.

but it also gets used in other cases/context.

thx in advance. SL

I think its like a punctuation mark but in a way joking. So visualise this sentence. "I love going to the dentist and getting my front teeth pulled out... choei choei"

Say nothing/do nothing, a negative response to a question

thx to david (pm) and joe.

so so i understood already from the doctor example given.

anyway, great word thai again with several meanings.

So so.

Kind of a shrug off. Not polite, not too impolite, just a kind of lazy shrug and a so-so in English.

It would also be used to hide a true opinion that they don't want to give.

I think it means half-assed

No, but it does kind of lean towards the negative rather than the positive.

I think it can be used neutral in cases like these:

Where have you been yesterday?

Why do you want to know?

ถามเฉยๆ taam choei choei

Meaning: Just asking, no particular reason.

Shopkeeper: What are you looking for?

ดูเฉยๆ doo choei choei

Meaning: Just looking around a bit.

No negative connotation and certainly not offensive.

so,

doo choei choei

=

doo yang deeow

?

In my opinion yes.

  • Author

well already used

doo choei choei

on the market yesterday and worked fine!

I think it can be used to describe doing something, without that something having any great importance attached to it.

Like the phrase you used in the market, in English we might say "I'm just looking". Not to say that it means, 'just' in a directly translated way, but that it implies that the activity isn't particularly serious.
