Morning, we are looking at coming across to Thailand from Australia for 2 or 3 months just to live life (not working whilst in Thailand) and see what its all like there.

I have a NZ passport whilst Helen has an Australian passport; intention was to purchase a one way ticket Australia-Thailand and make the decision on where to go to next whilst in Thailand. However we have now been told that we need to have a return air ticket to get a visa. I'm sure I've read different online but cannot find the webpage now - typical now that I want to view it again.

Can someone tell me if I can get a 60 or 90 day visa with only a one way ticket?

Thanks, Pete

The embassy and consulate in Sydney both list tickets as being needed. But may in reality not ask for them. I suggest you contact one of the honorary consulates listed here for your visas. http://canberra.thaiembassy.org/consulate.html

You could buy a cheap onward ticket on a LCC to any nearby country to show for them if needed. Check airasia.com for flights.

Then buy Bangkok - Kuala or Chiang Mai - Kuala or any other go-back ticket and ask double entry visa. You will have 60 days then on day for example 58 you can go travel and when come back you will have another 60 days. with VISA almost all carriers not ask ticket to go out country, but with 30 days stamp can ask.

I came here on a one way ticket from the Philippines, not a problem. Only got a 30 day exemption on arrival but that wasnt a problem. I moved to Chiang Mai and have various option when it becomes visa time. Go up to Mae Sai and the Myanmar border when a simple crossing will give me an additional 14 days (Yes its not long and the trip can be a pain) or head to Vientainne (Laos) where I cross at a place called Nong Khai. Its an overnighter in Vientainne to get a double entry visa from the Thai consulate which in reality is good for 6 months. (Break down as below)

After the first 2 months I visit Chiang Mai immigration and pay 1900 baht for an additional month visa... so 3 months thus far

Then just before the 3 months is up I go t Mai Sai and cross the border, but on return I quote the visa number and get 2 more months visa.

Once that time is up I then approach CM immigration again pay the 1900 baht and get the final month visa. Total of 6 months.

Seems a bit of running about but you get to see a bit more of the place so thats cool by me! smile.png

Hope it works out ok for you. Thailand is a big place and there are lots of things to see and places to go....enjoy your trip.

Ok peoples; hot off the press and after a phone call today (27SEP13) with the friendly staff at the Thai Consulate in Brisbane.

How to get a 60 Day Double Entry Visa: ie spend 60 days there, then cross the border and re-enter Thailand to get another 60 days. This is what we were told:

1) Turn up at the Thai Consulate between 9.30am – 12.30pm, week days. Fill in your application form there on site and can get your photo’s taken there too. Cost is $90. Go for lunch and come back same day to pick up your passport with Visa. Of course this is dependant upon you not having any issues which arise during the application process.

2) The Visa is valid for 6 months from date of issue until activated on arrival Thailand (stamped). So you can get it ahead of time and enter Thailand within 6 months of Visa being issued. The actual Visa date will then start from when you arrive into Thailand.

3) Can enter Thailand on one way ticket provided you can show you have plans of leaving within the 60 days. This shows them that you understand you must leave before your Visa expires. Our plans are to take a weekend holiday in KL or Singas and then fly back in for 60 day Visa number two.

4) It will make sense to dress nicely for your visit to the Thai Consulate. They will respect you a lot more and everything should run more smoothly for you.

5) Have a clear plan of when you intend on leaving Thailand. They want to be sure you understand the rules. The lady from the Thai Embassy who we spoke to was very helpful and has cleared up all the inaccurate (or out of date) information that can be seen online.

1. each entry can be extended by 30 days for 1,900 baht per extension at immigraiton in Thailand.

2. The validity of the visa starts from the date you apply for the visa. Meaning that if the visa is valid for 6 months you have 6 months time to use the visa.

That means that both entries must be made within those 6 month time. Any entry you don't make before the visa expires you will lose.

3. With a visa there is no need of proof of onward travel. Although some consulates might require it to provide a visa, it is not an immigraiton requirement.

Make sure you understand that the visa is only valid for 6 months as from the date of issue !

The visa date does Not start when you arrive in Thailand.

When you arrive in Thailand you will be given "permission to stay" for 60 days another 30 days can be had on application to a local immigration office at a cost of 1900Bht.

Your second entry to Thailand MUST be made prior to the visa expiring (use by date)

You second entry can again be extended.

KiwiPete,

as you say except for the 'use before' date which has been explained by Mario and Sceptic.

I got a double entry tourist visa from Brisbane in July without showing a return ticket (although I did have one)

If you look in the 'latest reports of getting a visa' topic at the top you will see my post (sorry can't get the hang of copying the link)

The people in the Consulate are very pleasant and helpful but in July the property was for sale - suggest you double check the address!

Comments comments and more comments.... no wonder there are so many perspectives on what the Visa rules are. We now have a plan which is good and will clarify final details in person when at the Thai Embassy in a few weeks time and advise in here.

Thanks to all for respective inputs.

The visa is valid for entry from date of issue for a set period of time and all entries must be made before the time expires or are lost. If you make the first entry just before it expires you can still stay the normal allowed period of time and make a normal extension but you would not be allowed another entry using that visa. There were comments because your para 2 did not appear to recognize that.
