Social Security Fund (Thailand)

Featured Replies

I am getting mucked about here. If you are either an expat Director or Managing Director can you still pay into the Thai Social Security Fund? I have been informed you are considered wealthy enough and no need to pay.

Can someone please explain as I can not find the answer anywhere.

Cheers.

Directors of companies cannot be members of the SS scheme.

I was not aware there was an option, expats are usually steered towards getting either self insurance ( put some money in the bank for a rainy day) or take out a health/medical policy.

Thanks guys. One of the reasons I asked is if I retire here and have paid into the SS Fund for a minimum of one year (I think) I believe as long as you pay your contributions each month after retirement you are covered for life and the rewards will benefit me long term especially regarding medical benefits!!

I think you will find that it stems from the definition of employee and employer in the act. It applies to employees who have agreed to work for an employer. As an employer (Managing Director) you have not actually agreed to work for an employer.

My problem with this is that it also seems that if you are on the books as a director and work for another company you still seem not to be eligible.

Dont know your age but when you get to 60 you are not a good bet, best to self insure and have an annual medical check to be on the safe side.

If you manage to get in the SS scheme before you are 60 you have the option of continuing payments and you will continue to have health care.

My HR Senior Executive physically went to the Social Security office and asked the followed question: "Can a Director or Managing Director pay into the Social Security Fund"?

This was their reply.

If you were a member of the SSF prior to 2007 then you are ok and nothing changes.

After 2007 if you are a Director, Managing Director or Shareholder you will not be able to contribute to the SSF.

As already mentioned in this topic, if you retire/resign you can still contribute into the fund and still receive the health care.

Has anyone joined the SSF post 2007?
