suicidal mating (semelparity)

Featured Replies

I was reading some research regarding the Australia marsupial male Antechinus which is notable for its semelparity (suicidal reproduction) It literally mates in a frenzy of activity until it dies. I got to thinking about some of the expats I have seen in LOS who do the same thing.

The scientific literature describes Antechinus in the following terms:

Males of semelparous species spend most of their lives as immature animals and mature just before the breeding season,"

This gives them some urgency to mate, so it is no wonder that the breeding season is so frantic. Each mating is done over and over again until the male dies of exhaustion. The only way for males to avoid die-off is for them to be raised independently of any females so they are never exposed to the hormones that kickstart the mating frenzy.

Raises some interesting parallels with our expat brothers in the LOS dont you think?

Sounds alot like "Pattayus Expatus" to me.

Some of these have also been known to act like lemmings and leap from tall buildings after continuous mating with local species.

Others tend to return to the spawning grounds of their new mate in the far reaches of Isaan territory.

It might be one of the better ways to go. When I reach the point in life that I think its no longer worth living, give me a shot of this hormone and turn me loose on a flock of girls, I ask for the flock as precaution against the demise of the sweet thing, of the first encounter.

I was always told to have a backup plan so I want a sure thing with no chances for a breakdown or cop out in the planning.
