What kind of visa?

Featured Replies

Hi! I badly need your information about how I can acquire a visa? I gave birth here in Bangkok last May, and my son was diagnosed with a congenital heart disease which soon will be given a corrective heart surgery. My son is in the care of a pediatric cardiologist so we often take our son to the hospital and won't be able to go back to our country. My husband just had his work permit issued recently so he still cannot make me as his dependent since it requires at least 6 months of work here. I am desperate already how to find the kind of visa I can acquire. Thank you, it will be of great help answering my inquiries.

Staying in Thailand as a dependent does not requires your husband to have been working for 6 months. The only criteria is that he needs to be on a 1 year extension of stay. But you will need to get the visa in a neighbouring country, if you do not have a non-immigrant visa already. Although they might be lenient given your sons condition and convert your visa to a non-immigrant.

You can get a 90 day permission to stay to take care of your child with a doctors letter explaining that your child cannot travel. if it is a private hospital, the hospital will have liaisons with immigration and can help you with getting an extension more easily. if not a private hospital, the letter from the doctor/hospital will be enough. Do have the doctor indicate how long before the child will be able to travel. Also take a copy of birth certificate and maybe a few photos of your child to confirm the condition and not being able to travel.

Extensions for this reason are given for 90 days at a time.

Get the paediatrician to write a letter stating that the baby is not fit to travel and you are his essential carer. Immigation will give you an extension of stay up to 90 days.

The process is repeatable

If your husband has an extension of stay from immigration you can get one as his dependent. There is no 6 month wait for your extension. In order to get the extension you would need a non immigrant O visa.

You could also get an extension of stay of up to 90 days to care for your child. This would require a letter from their doctor requesting the extension. Most large hospitals should be aware of this. See clause 2.25 of police order 777/2551.
