Thai-Cambodian border situation normal as ICJ’s ruling looms

BANGKOK, 19 October 2013 (NN) - National security agencies announce that the situation at the Thai-Cambodian border is normal while the two countries are waiting for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to rule on the Phra Viharn case.

The border situation in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces had been peaceful so far, authorities said. Thailand and Cambodia were on good terms and their activities along the border were still normal.

A meeting was on eastern economic development between the two countries was held on Friday in Trat as planned, suggesting that their relations were unaffected.

A representative of the Royal Thai Navy said Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra would soon visit navy forces and preside over the opening ceremony of a Thai-Cambodian border crossing in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces.

Why are these mindless statement being made?

Is there someone issuing orders to make these statements so as to provoke an incident of some sort thus deflecting attention away form the happenings in Parliament and the controversial bills that are currently in the process of being prepared ?

The I.C.J.judgement when it is delivered irrespective of its outcome must be honoured by both countries no matter which country the judgement may favour.

Strange as it may seem to the government and the politicians the ruling decision is due to the process they requested to settle this matter.

Therefore selective following of the courts judgement should not nor must not be the case.Thailand went to an international court as did Cambodia. Respect and follow the courts decision.

Just for once it would indeed be gratifying for all of us to actually see that the laws apply across the board not just to a select privileged few whether they be either Thai or Cambodian nationals.

I believe that Thailand said several months ago that should they not like the judgemnet handed down by the ICJ they would not honor it!!

Does this not have a familiar ring to it? If PTP likes ---- ok. If PTP don't like we won't do it.

Let's hope the remnants of yellow shirts and the Democrats abide by the court's decision.

If it goes against Thailand, they will no doubt try to stir up nationalist fervour once again.

I think you'll find that the statements are made to prevent a cross border incident. Thailand may no longer have a sabre rattling Anti Cambodian boundary pushing (in the literal sense, ask Veera) PM in charge but the common factor of the Army is still there. The last thing Thailand needs is some idiot Army Wallah pumping a few rounds of cluster munitions over there again.

Has anyone anywhere seen any other news about Preah Vihear other than what the MFA has claimed?

The Democrats and their backers will be doing everything in their power to stir up nationalist sentiment to try and undermine this government if the ruling goes against Thailand.

Expect further protests at the temple and its surrounds. This has been their clear aim from the beginning; to destabilise the country sufficiently to prompt military intervention.

Surely Pheau Thai are trying to destabilise the country with their whitewash of arsonists and rioters bill?
