BANGKOK: -- A fire broke out on top of Police General Hospital on Rama I road across from Central World this morning at 6am.

The fire reportedly started in a meeting room on the ninth floor and spread as the sprinkler system failed to work.

An hour later, the Bon Kai fire department managed to put out the fire with no injuries reported.

Maintenance not a high priority in Thailand, if its broke don't fix it ,

wonder how many more sprinkler systems don't work,

regards Worgeordie

I like the fire "breaks out" bit of the headline.

Remarkable. As this hospital is supposed to be of such value to Thais, how on earth could there be such a lack of maintenance? And yes, we know that will be the reason for an 'electrical fault'.

A nonsensical post has been deleted. Please stay on topic.

Evacuating patients from a hospital can be quite serious. Patients in the ICU are not easily moved and I believe the Police hospital also has a number of prisoners who may require special guarding.

Police Hospital building hit by fire
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Police General Hospital was hit by a fire on Monday morning, leading to evacuation of patients, police said.

No one was injured in the blaze that broke out on the ninth floor of the Chalerm Phrakiart Building at 6:30 am.

Six fire engines took about an hour to put out the fire.

Pol Lt-Gen Jongjet Ao-jenpong, the surgeon-general of the hospital, said the fire damaged only the ninth floor.

He said some patients were evacuated during the fire fighting and were returned to their rooms after the blaze was put out.

The medical services on the ground floor continued as usual while fire fighters were controlling the blaze, Jongjet said.

Police Commissioner-General Pol-Gen Adul Saensingkaew, who rushed to the scene, said the fire was apparently caused by a short circuit inside the Sant Sarutanon auditorium, which is under renovation. He said the soundproof wall cushion caused the fire to spread fast and added that the automatic fire extinguishing system was not operating when the fire broke out.

Adul also complimented Pol Lt Col Withoon Luang-amornsak, deputy Crime Suppression Sub-division 3, for leading eight officers to fight the fire before the fire engines arrived.

The sprinkler system didn't work in the Police Hospital? I hope a proper investigation is held to determine why the fire supression system failed. It is good that there were no injuries or fatalities.

Small Fire ? There is a huge smoke.

And .... off course electrical fire as every day in TH.

.....sounds like another contract in the making.......$$$......

Anybody remember this fire at the AUA building (http://bangkok.coconuts.co/news/fire-ravages-aua-building-on-rajdamri-road)?

Well, now that plot of land is being developed and soon we will have yet another high rise condo building.

Fires can happen for many reasons, but interesting that a new police hospital already is under construction. Maybe it need to expand on the plot where the old hospital is located?

The room where the fire broke out was under renovation, perhaps that's why the sprinkler system there was out of action?

A sprinkler system, in a hospital this size NOW WORKING !!! This is a New Low

even for Thailand.

According to the contract a sprinkler system is installed, did they also check if it was connected to the water system ?

It would not be the first time high class professional builders make a nid noi mistake ....

Whether the room was under renovation or not, the fire supression system should be maintained and operational.

Maybe 15 years ago, I was staying at Indra Regent hotelnot too far from this place. It may or may not be in the same police/fire jurisdiction as Police Hospital. Anyways, the hotel ran a pretty thorough fire drill done in concert with the fire-police. They even recruited several guests from the lobby and pool area to participate, of which I agreed to play along.

Don't know if a sprinkler test was performed or not, but a fire brigade made up of hotel employees responded to a faux fire and used the hose cabinets in the hallways. They did test the risers in those cabinets and they worked. We then evacuated down to a lower level, out onto a roof, then down two flights of outside fire escapes.

A little ceremony was held at the conclusion and they gave the guests a little certificate of appreciation and free drink coupons at the bar. I have a commenerative picture of the event somewhere in my old trunk. I was quite pleased to participate and see how they went about things. The Fire police officer in Command was some sort of senior level Captain and was treated with great reverence by the hotel management.

I was surprised that there was actually a supervised fire drill with meaningful evolutions were held at my hotel. I don't know if this was an anomaly or standard practice. Just my experience.
