Delivery Status Notification (Failure)

Delivery Status Notification (Failure) - my ISP keeps sending me this.

I have 2 anti virus programs and a Maleware program.

Everything is good on that behalf.

But, somehow someone uses one of my email address as an originator to send spam.

The following message to <[email protected]> was undeliverable.
The reason for the problem:
5.1.0 - Unknown address error 550-'5.1.1 <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: User unknown'

This is the failed message .

One of the people it got sent to was [email protected] ... heck, I feel sorry for him.

What do I do?

This only seems a recent thing.

How do they do it?

Thanks in Advance for the replies ... thumbsup.gif

There are many possibilities to WHY you are receiving these messages from your ISP mail provider.

1. Your computer could have a virus and is using your email credentials to send out spam

2. Someone has captured your email credentials and is using those on another PC to send out spam

2. Your ISP mail provider doesn't require credentials to send ( is an Open Relay) and your email name is being used to send out spam

3. Some other ISP mail provider is an open relay and your email name is being used to sent out spam

The first one you can fix by cleaning your machine. The others are really out of your hands.

Your options then would be to either live with it, possibly create an automatic filter to auto delete the ISP messages, or to move to another email name and abandon the problematic one.

Oh, what did you hope to accomplish by posting that htm link? If it was 'the message' then you just spammed the board and put any user clicking it at risk w00t.gif

The normal warning to email users: Don't open email from unknown senders. Beware of links in email. If you see a link in a suspicious email message, don't click on it. Rest your mouse (but don't click) on the link to see if the address matches the link that was typed in the message. Given this, it's not really a good idea to copy/paste the links from suspicious emails to a public message board, well, unless you hope to personally profit. Then I guess it's ok. We all could use an alternative revenue stream.

It's happened to me with Hotmail. I reported it to them, they put a hold on the account until I changed my password. The problem seemed to be resolved. You should probably warn people in your address book that they might get emails looking like they're from you ... not to click on links in those emails.

There is nothing you can do.

It is extemely simple to send an email pretending to be from anyone.

It wouldnt pass close scrutiny but it would look genuine at first and the bouncebacks would go to the suggested originator.

If these bounces end up in your spam thats the best you can hope for.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Because of the originating address, I thought maybe my computer had been compromised.

It's one of a number of email accounts so I'll just delete that one.

Thanks for all the replies and to Rimmer for removing the link ... I wasn't trying to be malicious ... just provide all the information I had so that the problem could be analysed in it's full context.

I'm open to more comments ... just wanting to thanks the contributors thus far ... thumbsup.gif

.

You could take a look at the email header information to see where it originated and what hops it took to try to get to its destination, though suggesting this made me wonder if the Delivery Status Notification (Failure) email is itself authentic or even came from your ISP email provider.

Sometimes these things are so convoluted, authentic email wrapped in a fake rejection notification, that after looking at everything it's just simpler to send it to spam and let the filter do its job.

I usually ignore the use of my email address, 'Rich@' is common and too easily generated, I'm more concerned if I see anyone from my contact list being used in the From: To: CC: BC: or other headers as then I know for sure one of our accounts or systems have been compromised.

Are you using Outlook, Incredimail or something similar to retrieve your emails?

I had a similar problem a year or two ago. I was getting delivery notice failure messages for outdated email addresses still in my address book that I hadn't deleted and everybody in my address book (including my other email addresses) were getting spam from my Hotmail address once a month.

The emails all originated from my own Hotmail account but, obviously, I hadn't sent them.

I have several email accounts and was using either outlook or Incredimail to access and download new emails from those accounts automatically. I found that my Hotmail account had been compromised and, via outlook/incredimail, was sending out spam once a month.

I can't remember the details but I found a 'link' that had been installed somewhere in the outlook/Incredimail settings with instructions to send the monthly spam to my whole address book.

I deleted this 'link', changed my email passwords and never had any more problems.
