Questions about ED Visa

Featured Replies

I have a few questions about ED visa. I know I have to exit thailand to apply. I was thinking of going to Kuala Lumpur.

How much is the fee I have to pay immigration in Kuala Lumpur. I went to a language school yesterday and they didnt know.

The language school said if I have a 1 year ED visa I have to report to immigration every 90 days but only need to pay 1900Bhat on the first visit and the rest of the visits are free, is this true. They didnt seem to sure about this.

If I apply for a multi entry ED visa. Can I leave and re-enter thailand as I want during the year.

I didnt ask them this, if I want to apply for another 1 year ED Visa at the end of the 1st year. Do I need to exit thailand again to re-apply for another ED VIsa

Most nationalities can enter Malaysia without visa so no entry expense to immigration - Thai Consulate will change about 2,000 baht in local currency for single entry visa. Do not believe you will receive a multi entry ED visa for language school. It will be single entry and then you must extend every 90 days for 1,900 baht at immigration with school paperwork and attendance sheet.

Visa is 2,000 baht for a single non-ED. You will not get a multiple non-ED, they have become rare and only issued in special circumstances.

For a language course the norm is that you get extensions of stay for 90 days, at a cost of 1,900 baht every 90 days.

KL no longer does ED visas for attending a language school.

A single entry non immigrant visa costs the equivalent of 2000 baht everywhere.

I think you need to check for another school since they couldn't answer your very basic questions.

Unless you get a one year extension you would be paying the 1900 baht more than once. You will likely only be getting 90 day extensions.

You will not get a multiple entry ED visa at any nearby embassy or consulate.

You need re-entry permits to keep your extension valid if you want to travel. You can get a multiple re-entry for 3800 baht or a single entry for 1000 baht. A re-entry permit is only valid for the length of your extensions.

You would not need a new visa after one year of study. You would keep getting new extensions.

Do I understand that correctly, that I can travel using re-entry permits, but still have to do the extensions?

Was actually hoping to use the re-entry instead of the extension, in other words I was foolish enough to think I'll get another 90 days after returning to Thailand.

Yes you must get extensions.

Very unlikely that you will get anything other than 90 day extensions of stay. A re-entry permit is only good up to your "permission to stay date"

In your case therefore any travel would have to be undertaken and completed within a 90 day window not forgetting to allow sufficient time for the extension to be renewed.

Thanks for the info. If KL doesn't do ED Visa's anymore where's the nearest place to do apply. The language school said If I pay for a year of classes in one go I will get a 1 year ED visa and then just need to report to immigration every 90 day at no cost. They said there was a cost of 1900 bhat on the first visit. I got to admit this sounds a bit funny to me. It sounds like I would be better to just apply for a Permit to travel when I need it. Any idea how much these are?

Post #4..... 1000 single 3800 multiple

He is asking about extensions of stay which are 1,900 baht each. Post four quote is for re-entry permits.

Most language study will only be a 90 day extension but Phuket has been providing longer but not sure about a year still be available anywhere for part time study.

Where are you living?

Penang or Vientiane for visa.

Phuket

You will get 6 month extensions from reports I can recall.

Penang is closest for visa.

Believe Phuket has an ongoing "crackdown" relating to ED based extensions.

More than 90 days is unlikely unless studying at university.

Penang gives a 30 day under consideration stamp before giving the 6 month extension stamp. Apparently they do a visit to the school to confirm the applicant is attending classes.

I am sure you actually mean Phuket ! smile.png

Yes the "under consideration" stamp , has I believe, been in use for some time now.

Anecdotal "evidence" would suggest the numbers of "students" is decreasing !

Yes Phuket.

Yes Phuket.

The people I have sympathy with are the genuine students, whose lives are inconvenienced by the inconsiderate who believe they can "get away" with attempting to scam the system.

ED visa you have to pay 1900 baht every 3 months when you report to immigration , not only first time.

If you want to leave Thailand to another country, you need a re-entry stamp , and it will cost you another 1900 baht .

This school is not giving you the correct information , they should know this.

And how much dis you pay to the school ? 1 year should not cost you more than 18000-22000 baht .

A single re-entry permit costs 1000 baht.

I have a multi entry education visa with a 1 year stamp, and paid for everything including lessons up front. Total cost 34,000 baht. No need for 90 day extensions. Though still require the 90 day reporting. However I can now come and go to Thailand as I please. This visa was issued in Hua Hin/Pranburi. As far as I know there's nothing rare or special about it. The cost was about 18,000 excluding the Thai lessons but I'd have to dig out the receipt to be sure. And yes the multi entry was nearly 4,000 of that cost.

I was on the single entry visa before, which Required 90 day extensions at 1,900 baht. And after 1 year was up no I didn't have to exit the country to renew. I just did everything locally. Oh and finally I've previously had 3 single use re-entry permits on my old visa. They cost 1,000 baht each time. Which is fine if you don't leave more than a couple of times and don't mind the hassle of going to the immigration office.

You do not have a visa if you are doing 90 day reports to immigration.

You have a one year extension of stay based upon attending a school. And you have a multiple re-entry permit that you paid 3800 baht for.

A one year extension of stay, extending my visa. No? This is just semantics. Surely I still have a visa. I have a non immigrant visa in the passport with a visa number. Is that not a visa? Regardless. The point of the post was today that you can get a one year "extension/visa" without having to extend every 90 days and pay 1,900 baht. Everybody had to report every 90 days (at no cost). Are you saying these people don't have visas?

Anybody who is making 90 day reports does not have a valid visa.

They stay in Thailand on the basis of an extension to stay .

If you believe you have a visa then leave the country (without a re-entry permit) and return using your now dead visa !

We will all wait to hear of your success smile.png

Actually not quite true as those here on non immigrant O-A visa entry will have to do 90 day reporting if they stay longer than 90 days of the allowed one year entry and if a multi entry visa they do not require a re-entry permit for travel during the validity of the visa.

But poster is not talking about that type of visa so must have obtained an extension of stay from immigration if allowed more than a 90 day stay, which is all a non immigrant ED visa allows.

You are of course correct.

I was a little antagnonised by the posters "expertise"............hence the over hasty reply !

Can anyone comment on applying for the ED visa in Hong Kong?

I will be signing up with a Thai Language school shortly and planned to apply for the ED visa whilst in HK for the holidays.

Many Thanks

I have a multi entry visa. I've just been to Japan and sailed through immigration. Success :-)

You have a One year Extension of Permission to Stay based on Study, plus you have purchased a Multiple Re-entry Permit, this is why you got back into Thailand and your one year extension date was re-stamped into your passport (not 90 days from entry date) - your Visa has now expired.

It is not possible for Hua Hin (inside of Thailand to issue you with a One Year Multiple Entry ED Visa), this is not just semantics, you are confusing two completely separate entities; if you didn't have the re-entry permit you would only have got a 30 Day Visa Exempt Entry on returning to Thailand from Japan, despite having a one year extension of permission to stay, which is not a visa.
