PHUKET: -- In terms of numbers, Russians may have outstripped other Europeans as tourists coming to Phuket, but they still have a long way to go before they topple the Brits from the ranks of those working legally on the island.

Yaowapa Piboonpol, Chief of the Phuket Department of Employment told The Phuket News this week that, from 2009 to September this year, 9,141 foreigners received work permits.

The largest number – 1,224 – were issued to British citizens, followed by Russians, with 758 work permits. At the bottom of the list were Taiwanese citizens, with just 27 work permits.

The largest number of work permits went to people working in hotels (1,304), followed by food and beverage employees (1,182).

About a third of the work permits (2,924) describe the holders as managers, with the other main categories being company chairpersons (2,607), company “officers” (1,274), teachers (697), chief executives (460) and trainees (161).

Just over half of the permit holders (4,590) are registered as working in Muang District.
