Raptor harrying toy poodle

Featured Replies

The smallest of my toy poodles, a bitch about 4 kg, got left behind this morning. When I looked back, she was trotting off in the wrong direction across the rice paddies (and this on a path she walks along daily!).

She was not alone, A few feet above her was the threatening figure of an immature Pied Harrier, swooping back and forth! It took me a few minutes to get back to her, and the whole time, the harrier was shadowing her. Eventually I got near enough to call her back, and the harrier veered off. On a previous occasion, a male Marsh Harrier, a rather tougher proposition, harried her, but that time I was nearby. I suppose she's just a little bit too big for them.

For non-birders, a Pied Harrier has a wingspan of a metre or so.... quite a big bird.

How did your dog react to being harried? Did she realise the danger or think it a game?

I would love to have a German Shepherd (I've had three in the past), but things just haven't worked out that way, Totster.

Tawng, I don't think she realised there was a danger.
