Police set up "teargas usage zones"

BANGKOK, 11 November 2013 (NNT) - Deputy Metropolitan Police Bureau Chief, Pol. Maj. Gen. Adul Narongsak, made updates about the ongoing protests in Bangkok - also announcing that any trespassers of the designated no-pass zones will be dealt with teargas.

Democrat Party-led protests against the amnesty bill continue at the Democracy Monument, said Pol. Maj. Gen. Adul, whereas supporters of the People’ Army against the Thaksin Regime remain at Phan Fah Bridge.

Moreover, there have been cases where protesters at the Makhawan Bridge used sling shots to launch steel nuts at the police force securing the area - causing damage to a police booth.

The Deputy Police chief also elaborated that the signs stating “teargas usage zone”, have been put up in 11 areas of the city to serve as a warning before more action would be taken should protesters become unwilling to negotiate. He indicated, however, advance warning would be given if the situation prompts usage of tear gas and water-cannon.

Why did not the BIB make Ratchaprasong a tear gas zone in the red shirt rally of 2010? Oh wait, my mistake. The BIB are red shirt card carrying members.

At least it is better than "Life Firing Zone" of Mark/Suthep.

According to TAT, the new zones are expected to add another 1 million adventure tourists !!

Not one incident of violence by the anti-amnesty and anti-government protestors yet and the Yingluck government has already declared teargas free fire zones!

And what would u have used against M-79 grenade launchers ? throwing banana's or pineapples or maybe durian , that hurts .

Big question is how to defend urself from a mob that was burning Bkk down using slingshots , guns and grenade launchers .

Anybody got the awnser ???

Life fire zones to protect normal citizens and security forces from the Red armed militants. Tear gas zones to "protect" the Red police and Red government from the normal citizens.

Does the tear gas know it has to stay in a certain zone? It is prone to drifting as the wind dictates.

The last time the Thai police used tear gas against protestors it was against yellow shirts and there were many many people had legs blown off and suffered horrendous serious injuries. Go find the videos on youtube if you have the stomach.

Interesting that The BIB are doing this. They have a very poor track record in crowd control, and did nothing to stop the violence in 2009 and 2010. Of course as they are under the Criminal Caddy from Dubai, I suppose they are carrying out his instructions. As these demos grow, which it appears they will, it will be interesting to see how the BIB respond.

I disagree. It's relevant to relay a concern about the type of teargas grenades used. Citing the 2008 usage and the damage caused when they exploded is relevant to today. I too hope they don't have any old stock of the same teargas grenades.

The remark was about setting up 'life fire zones' versus 'teargas usage zones'. How many grenades were lobbed in such zone is somewhat irrelevant. Mind you if you want to know about the capacity to produce a certain effect, you might get in touch with Canadian reporter vanderGrift, on May 19th he got one lobbed on him and a few soldiers around him.

In the mean time we're drifting off topic off course. Nothing new there though.

How the police handle the situation is indeed relevant to the original post and the fact that the grenades used in the earlier riots, reportedly from China, were explosive which is a far cry from the tear gas normally employed in crowd control. Tear gas is defined as a non lethal weapon but this is not the case for the explosive variety.

Furthermore, the RTP has an abysmal record for crowd control or control of any kind for that mater and can not be trusted to react in a controlled and disciplined manner. They are rabble in uniform as has been shown on many previous occasions and their leadership in the lofty heights of senior officers fares no better.

It's highly relevant given the BIBs historical incompetence in crowd control over the past 6 years of on and off demos, on both sides for anyone that has lived here during this time.How they act this time will be an indication on where their loyalties lie, which is already clear. However, will they dispurse crowds in an orderly fashion, or will it be another chaotic show of general incompetence that The BIB are renowned for?

We must be due a Chalerm announcement soon.
