Ten thousand red shirts turned out last night at the 700 year stadium in Chiang Mai. Our old mate Jatuporn was there firing up the crowd along with local federal mp Yaowapha WongSawat. They were ranting on about democracy and how it should be protected and that Yingluck and her government were democratically elected by the people.

Any violence? Was anything you quoted above untrue? No? So what's your problem?

I'm not supporting the Shinawatras but as long as you guys and the Upper-Middle class continue to to show that level of contempt against the vast majority of Thailand's population we're all going to be in trouble. How do you know the reds are thick skulls thugs? Did you speak with some of them? Have you tried to understand their motivations? Do you have the slightest idea of the lives they live? They're just "lao", uneducated, greedy, they smell of naampla, they are so black 555! A class war is going on to bring some level of social justice in this country between the rich and the poor and you side with the oppressor. I hope Thaksin gets replaced by someone who will really defend these people interests. But it's not going to be the Dem's that's for dam_n sure.

You are so full of contempt! Thick skulled? Thugs? Yeah you guys are so smart and educated, right? You have it all figured out. You want to be associated with the well-off Bangkokian society so bad. Be quality expats not like these losers in the provinces with their red shirt bar-girl girlfriends! Our girlfriends are half-Chinese! So you're on strike? Gonna go to the people-court?

Take a 'chill pill' !

That the red shirts are "thick-skulled thugs" is not in doubt. Remember, there are few families more well-off than the Shinawatras so your crusade against Hi-so's is futile and inappropriate.

good post - spot on!

While I wouldn't phrase it quite like that, but it is disappointing that so many seem to side with the privileged elites of Thailand and show contempt for those less privileged.

Being opposed to a wealthy, corrupt ex-PM does not mean you are siding with the "privileged elites". Showing contempt for the Red Shirts does not equate to "showing contempt for those less privileged".

The Shinawatras are exactly the privileged elites.

And why would it be relevant if an expat has girlfriend with a red shirt, is from the provinces, is from Bangkok, or is half chinese (or half spanish, half african, half cambodian, or half anything)?

Blackbird has been suggesting this in all of his posts, that anyone who is against Thaksin or Red Shirts is a Yellow Shirt.

For the record I lived in BKK from 2005 to 2010, so had to put up with both side protesting. 2009 and 2010 were far more scary, given the posturing and rhetoric of the the Red Shirts, and their occupation of central Bangkok. I also think the yellows were morons for taking the airport as well.

As for the other bit, about where girlfriends come from, not exactly relevant. He threw down accusations yesterday that critique of Yingluck was sexist, he then withdrew that and started flinging the GF origin stuff. Probably the majority of posters have wives and GFs from the provinces, so his point is moot. Mrs. Toad is from one of the Red Shirt strong holds, up until 2008,was probably still a Thaksin supporter, but that changed with the introduction of Samak and then Somchai as proxies for Thaksin, she despised them.When. The rest of the violence started in BKK the following year, that was it for her, and she is now a Dem voter.

Blackbird seems to have some sort of complex about others.

Well, the Cambodians tried that back in the '70s. If the Vietnamese hadn't marched in, every single literate Khmer would have been killed by Pol Pot and his anti-upper class killers. As it is, between 20 & 25% of the population ended up dead.

... while many of the same farangs would side with the equivalent of the "red thugs" back in their own country

Correct. But one who did more for the under-privliged and poor, particularly in his first term, than hundreds of years of other governments.

Sure they'll have some power with 29 Milj members !!!

The Red Shirts number 29 million, really. Are you going to prove that "fact"?

I very much doubt that he can prove that supposed fact.

I believe he came out with that "fact" by thinking "PTP got 48% of the votes in the last election, 70.000.000 Thais, 48% of 70M is 29 million (actually 33.6M but whatever), so voila!, there are 29 million Red Shirts in the country!"

Of course that is a profoundly stupid chain of thought, first because the 48% was the total votes cast, a subset of the voter turnout, not the percentage of the total population, PTP got 15.7M votes in the elections (one must wonder who the other 13.3M Red Shirts voted for) Then of course not everyone who voted for PTP would identify as a Red Shirt.

Incidentally 15.7M is about 22.5% of the population.

The only statistic I've seen about Red Shirt membership was 13% of the population supporting them, that was in a poll in 2011, since then I hardly doubt their numbers to have increased, specially after recent events.

Well I'm confused...I don't understand why you would lie so blatantly. You are the one who brought the girlfriend thing up. It is easy to verify. Let me quote you: You have your own agenda, which I'm guessing is based on either a) not living here very long or xcool.png.pagespeed.ic.WVYpdUy2j0.webp not living here at all C) Living with a red shirt.

I'm not fighting against you personally. I don't even know you. You accused me of having an "agenda" but I will never lie to tarnish your supposed reputation on this forum. I even think that you and I have common aspirations for the country, we both care for the country, we both have children and want to insure the best future for them, right? We disagree on how to get there and could have a peaceful debate. There is no need for you to attack me like this.

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship or the red-shirt movement

Kinda funny really considering their man in exile would happily become a dictator given the chance.

Add to that their love for Cambodia's Hun Sen and their pro-democracy, anti-coup bona fides become rather questionable.

C'mon guys.

You have been supporting the Dems in being against sitting at the reconciliation table, against all government projects, against an amnesty, against Yingluck and whoever is around her, against forgiving, ... and fully approved the Dems' destructive rally that now wants to topple the elected government, as well as blindly supporting Suthep, who seems to turn insane and who, by the way, once said that he does not respect Farangs.

All this in the name of "expressing a different opinion", "freedom of speech", and democratic principles...

So, now you should be very happy that the reds come out to express their opinion in the same way that you approved for the opposite camp.

The reds are welcome to protest (some have been for awhile now --- but they were protesting against the government and the proposed amnesty)---- All I ask is that they leave the grenade launchers, machine guns, sniper rifles, grenades, pistols, slingshots and proven willingness to resort to violence at home!

BTW .. the Dems aren't against everything you claim. Suthep is nobody's favorite guy, and the current government is the least capable in years.

I find it interesting to observe that the anti-amnesty / anti-government protesters are either dressed in black & white or have whatever other colour of garb. The red-shirts are, well, just red-shirts. unsure.png

Agreed, the "reds" should be encouraged to protest their problems, not the problems of a fugitive criminal hell-bent on returning to Thailand with his criminal record wiped clean and those demands of this brown-nosing lackeys endeavouring to cause violence and mayhem - all at the beck and call of he who sees himself as a deposed emperor.

Well how would you react if your country's elite decided to revoke your right to vote? If they decided that you were simply too stupid to have an opinion? Killed your friends and family members in all impunity? If every government you voted for was pushed out manu military? I guess it would upset you. I am not advocated violence though. I think it is very misguided but I get why they're angry.

Get it through your thick red skulls. Treason is betraying one's country. Being against a useless and corrupt government isn't treason. If anything, it's being patriotic.

"A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against its government."

Edward Abbey.
